NEB Prizes 2021: All Applications

Building.a.community is an inspirational space that generates a bridge between different entrepreneurs, different communities, and different interests. A space designed and created to promote collaboration between different actors who interact within the shared framework of this living lab. In our growing community you’ll find artisans, NGOs, shop owners, a recording studio, a contemporary art gallery, breast cancer and social therapy studios and an oil recycling business to name a few.

We are hoping to create a virtual memory-scape using dust as the guiding metaphor for our relationship with the planet and with each other. Using dust’s ubiquitous nature as both an environmental force and a domestic presence, we will create a VR experience where people can input their own audio recollections and listen to other’s audio memories by wandering through a virtual world where each dust cloud tells its story.

What If we could experience our cultural assets in a different way? A more interactive, immersive, radiant way? We aim to make this happen by recreating the historical artworks with a multidisciplinary team. It will have 3 phases: Artworks will be chosen from museums and libraries with the public vote in phase 1. Then, new artworks will be recreated using light in phase 2 and new artworks will be projected at public spaces in phase 3. Thus, we will create a new bond with our cultural heritage.

"An Other City" tells the story of how the european city returned as a role model in urban planning. In the center of this documentary film stands the urban planner Jan Inghe (1944-2005). Hammarby sjöstad in Stockholm was his final work and legacy. The project was a trailblazer for the attractive and sustainable city and reached a worldwide recognition, visited by delegations from more than 170 countries. The film describe how this planning emerged and what have happened with it since. 

Ras de Terra (“RdT”) is a private initiative founded in 2019 in Extremadura, Spain. Its objectives span various disciplines which aim to change preconceived ideas about rural life, fight climate change through new methodologies that regenerate the land, and creation of new ways driving sustainable economic growth in the region with culture. RdT has revitalised the local architectural and agricultural structures, such as disused tobacco dryer to build a Cultural Center and Residence for artists.

The story of the rediscovery of the Little Danube River in Zálesie. A multi-year project to transform a neglected river embankment into a lively village promenade. Space for walks in nature, discovering fauna and flora, relaxation of paddlers, tourists, cyclists and locals. The former junkyard on the banks of the river and the meeting place of active drug addicts has turned into an attractive part of the region. The aesthetics of the intervention will merge with the surrounding nature over time.

During 2020, many peoples working lives changed for good. The nature of work has always influenced city transformations, and once again the way we work has changed radically due to COVID-19. We want to question how this will shape cities around the globe by investigating the proposed cities of Copenhagen, London and Tokyo, three cities our studio has a strong connection with. We see the adaptation to remote work due to COVID-19 as an opportunity to improve the future of our daily lives.

Giving children an opportunity to plant, tend and harvest their own food helps them learn first hand where vegetables come from and how to care for living things.

Fascinated by the unique shapes and bright colours, the studio designed a system to transform plastic factory waste into new interior accessories.

In this process, the pieces are cut through and CNC milled. Hence it is such a surprise to find out what is hidden inside and the marbled pattern is revealed, when the two halves are split.
To minimise any possible negative effect for the environment, as little as possible energy is put into the lumps, when transforming them into new unique products.

An old grove of pines in Uppsala now features a new residential house built completely in wood from old fir and pine treas. A year after completion the house still carries the savour of wood and forest. When you move across the courtyard, the chisled wooden facads dampen the sharper sounds of the incipient urban development such as during a stroll in a forest. The project infuses the development with its very own locally rooted character as a new sustainable and green district in Uppsala
