NEB Prizes 2021: All Applications

Based on the challenges of climate change, the two interdisciplinary summer programs "Alternative Economic and Monetary Systems (AEMS)" and “Green.Building.Solutions. (GBS)” deal with the increasing necessity of a socio-ecological transformation: Following a holistic approach, AEMS highlights alternatives for the economic status quo. GBS focuses on ecological architecture and sustainable urban planning. Both have an emphasis on a mixed international audience and transdisciplinary cooperation.

Can a new school bench help learn beauty and practice inclusion? Or a school courtyard be rethought as a green agorà to practice participation? Schools are at city’s heart, where social life begins and educational community can meet. City of Milan has contributed to innovate perspectives in education as urban policy and in use of public spaces, financing innovative learning environments co-designed in 14 schools of the city, especially in suburban areas, to transform schools in community spaces.

Submerged is an independent magazine born from the crucial need to address an increasingly present problem: climate change.

In order to give a complete overview on the current climate situation, the magazine is approached from a double point of view, a scientific and artistic one. The aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of climate change issues, a hypothetical dystopian future in case the situation gets worse, and the solutions that mankind is implementing to avoid this scenario.

Cities are our most precious innovation platforms and our most powerful invention to transform the future. Can you imagine something more transformative than some children connecting with, learning through, hacking and re-designing the city? What about those children being +10.000 children for a city of 660.000? What about the ideologist of this program being David Cuartielles, co-inventor of Arduino, and that one of the "hacked" infrastructures was Carlo Ratti's Digital Water Pavillion?

BEAUTIFUL FAILURES works on fragility, identifying the two most delicate materials of the celebrated Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, glass and the travertine of the pavement, to revisit this seemingly perfect architecture from its most vulnerable side. BEAUTIFUL FAILURES seeks a more inclusive and sustainable approach to our cultural heritage and material culture through re-use and re-reading, exploring the empathy generated by aesthetic attitudes that develop an affective relationship of care. 

Making Futures Bauhaus+ is an action research project that addresses questions of architecture as a collective form and architecture as a resource. Departing from these two perspectives, it operates as an experimental research unit that advances future paths for architectural practice and education. It was initiated in 2018 as a cooperation between raumlabor and the Berlin University of the Arts on the occasion of the Bauhaus’ centenary.

mydia is a material design research project by the artist and designer Fara Peluso, in collaboration with Art Laboratory Berlin and the Applied and Molecular Microbiology laboratory of the Institute of Biotechnology of TU Berlin. The research was part of the residency program for the multidisciplinary project Mind the Fungi where Peluso focused her work on developing a new organic material, based on fungi and algae extracts, and questioning how it could be used for different applications.

Churches are a significant part of European cultural history. Today old church buildings no longer serve the needs of today. In order to avoid sale or decay due to low occupancy rates, churches must be developed to better meet the needs of today and future.

We have created a concept for a more versatile use of church space for Sippola Church, which aims to develop the church building to better meet the needs of the present and the future. This concept was created by Essi Aalto and Karita Asmala
