The Citizen Railway Station (Bürgerbahnhof Plagwitz BBP) is a former industrial railway station that now turned into a 12-hectare green zone. The City Administration of Leipzig and the foundation “Ecken wecken”’ manage the continuous transformation in a co-creative process. Today this inclusive and vibrant place already hosts many activities such as a construction playground, urban gardens, animal habitats, an urban forest, ball game field, graffiti areas and a café – and more is to come.
What used to be a gloomy, grey traffic area at the back of the railway station is now a lively city square that functions as a new urban link in the city center of Hengelo. Its exuberant vegetation and state-of-the-art skate park set it apart from other railway station squares in the Netherlands. The Industrieplein clearly presents Hengelo as an inclusive city moving forward to a sustainable future.
The project MARCHIVUM reflects a culture of reconstruction that combines sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion. A former World War II-era bunker has been transformed into a beautiful and both socially and energy smart home for the city’s archive that provides a vibrant place for research, education and exhibitions. The MARCHIVUM’s new top floors, made of glass, provide transparency and create a connection to the residents of the neighbourhood.
The observatory is a project conceived with two minds and four hands during the health crisis. It is the result of a journey through the meanders of the urban fabric between research and action. It aims to federate initiatives and knowledge on cities in the face of transitions (ecological, citizen). A virtual place, it becomes a real place during residencies in the Loire region. A place for observation and debate, it implements a city factory outside the usual circuits.
The neighborhood behind The Nordic Square and Domus Vista, a high-rise sixties building, was once enclosed, and neglected. An urban space dominated by large windswept parking lots, and minimal recreational space. By means of a wise landscaping plan, renovation of high architectural value, relocation of a civic center, and a new nursing home, a complete transformation has taken place. Today a vibrant setting for a community, focusing on inclusion, with health and exercise as the unifying factor.
The project presented aims to make the Naples waterfront a safe and efficient promenade between city and sea, enable to face up to climate risks through the pedestrianisation of a good part of it (without, however, significantly hindering vehicular transit given that a special carriageway is foreseen for any critical issues) and the introduction of a series of innovative solutions for the recovery, treatment and re-use of rainwater, as part of the sustainable management of urban drainage.
