NEB Prizes 2021: All Applications

Ciboquadro is a community proposing a new way of thinking and talking about food. We aim to create a link between the farmer and the citizen, in the chosen space of a restaurant table. In an historical moment in which our society needs to reconsider and re-shape its food culture we aim to stimulate active discussion and thinking around the social and ecological impact of food and its value.

Through a platform we tell farmer’s stories to accompany you and your friend at the dinner table. 

We aim to promote the Low Mondego region, Portugal, and to revitalize local values that have suffered from institutional negligence, repositioning them by the Goals for Sustainable Development. Designing a strategy for regenerating systems, processes and productive cultures. To overcome segregation and lack of accessibility, surpassing the river barrier, betting on green mobility, inclusion programs, and landscape regeneration. Transforming it into an epicentre of culture, resiliency and equity.

The Renewable Materials for Healthy Built Environments PhD program at the University of Primorska in Koper, Slovenia offers a students sophisticated and interdisciplinary perspectives on sustainable and healthy construction. Students receive a highly interdisciplinary education exploring cutting edge topics and holistic approaches that prepare them to lead the construction sector’s transformation to creative and evidence-based solutions in engineering, science, and design.

The heart of an ancient farmhouse in the Po valley, the old barn called “Casazza” open up to the community as a ductile space, a “museum of itself” and of the history that transformed it and, at the same time, a new Landscape Study Center oriented to the knowledge and conservation of the environment. Completed by a new pavilion that respects its image, the building develops on two floors connected by double-height spaces, while on the outside minimal signs renew the envelope, evoking its memory.

The regeneration of the former Pasta-Factory Castelli, Como, is a cooperative initiative integrating into the same renovated place:

• 20 families with their homes;
• a Social Cooperative engaged in assistance and culture;
• a Design Studio dealing with the reuse of built heritage;
• a Foundation providing housing for fragile people.

The initiative is oriented to activate and to reuse an hidden urban resource, through an hybrid approach to materials and building elements.

The creative transformation happens in a cultural heritage with historical identity but a recent past of decay. It becomes the beacon of a new consciousness.

The Recyclinghaus is an experimental building, which was created from reused, recycled and recyclable components in a decomposable construction. Following the approach "form follows availability", it is a prototype that tests the possibilities and potential of various types of recycling in the real laboratory. The result is a unique house with distinctive aesthetics that has been planned and constructed in a cycle-oriented and resource-saving way.

The Impulse Project Stuttgart exemplifies how blue-green infrastructure can be implemented in dense urban spaces. It contributes to the urban microclimate, alleviates the demand for drinking water through its substitution and enhances the quality of stay in and around temporary accommodations through vertical greening. The central modules with water treatment and storage functions are designed as both a public space with high aesthetic value and an open lab for science and education.

 A network of under-25 people, supported by recognized contemporary circus festivals, which will dwell in peer-to-peer activities aimed at fostering practices, education, and artistic direction tools in this performing arts’ field, aiming at establishing a network for the artistic directors of tomorrow. Performing arts’ festivals will be able to work better with their communities of reference, re-imagining both their audiences and the places they take back and re-shape together.

The construction sector is the lifeblood of our European economy. It provides employment and prospects for millions. Yet, aren't the most beautiful buildings those that make one with the environment they're in? In the last decades, too few homes were truly built sustainably. The industry is unfortunately responsible enormous amounts of pollution, raw material extraction, toxicity levels. With Natura Mater we're paving the way for truly sustainable homes - made with low carbon materials.
