Design Curricula for a Resilient 21st Century is a co-creation project in higher education that calls upon students, lecturers, and the profession in Architectural Design to develop understanding, create trust, change culture, and embed sustainability into the curriculum to engender sense of purpose and responsibility for future practice.
Ten years after PUUR was commisioned to design the concept store, Moose in the City, its owners ask PUUR to re-fit the shop to make it suitable for a new retail concept with a focus on conscious lifestyle products.
The design concept "Theatre" was chosen as a reference to the former function of the location and delivering an inviting retail experience. The concept of sustainability is translated into three pillars: reduce, reuse & recycle.
Hit by the earthquake in 2012, the agricultural settlement was regenerated by organizing spaces in which to cultivate the sensory well-being of those who work there. Internal patios and long views draw a ‘Greenbelt factory’ in the search for adequate and spatially rich working conditions, for an empathy between the user and the spaces that welcome him. Two twin buildings are joined by an ‘agricultural gallery’ open to the collective experience, harmonizing the man’s action to the nature’s order.
An educational refuge in central Vienna, has a potential of connecting the neighborhood and nature. The concept rethinks flexibility and its need of externally driven systems. Distancing itself from conventional planning, the building is conceptualized with no main organization. Achieving a unique interior by continuing the landscape within the building, the built and natural environments are seen as a harmonious whole, in which human movement and experience play a central role.
Gaia by Actiu is first platform for the smart management of healthy and efficient high-performance spaces. It is a pioneering and disruptive IoT platform that incorporates sensors into the work environment to gather data on how it is used and the conditions of the environment, positively impacting user well-being, as well as the organization’s results. Gaia by Actiu monitors space occupancy, temperature, humidity, light, sound, and controls density in open areas and meeting rooms.
Another city is not only possible but also feasible: On the platform urban degrowth, a complete virtual miniature city becomes visible, through which one can wander. One can discover ideas for climate-just social housing, implementation examples for sufficient mobility, explanatory videos on alternatives to land consumption, and many more. To enable resilient urban design beyond growth, the platform accompanies the journey of innovative and transformative policies from one place to the next.
The “Little Red House", a pavilion on the issue of affectivity, and the "Pergola", a shady place to meet family, are the physical traces of an action-research that questions the living quality of Italian prisons.
Built between 2018 and 2019 in the Milan Bollate prison colloquium area, they witness the cooperation between the research group of the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies of Politecnico di Milano, inmates of Bollate, the Prison Administration and civil society associations.
The idea deals with perceiving the diverse narratives of productive landscapes, from them, selecting vital ones and then using the power of narratives to compress time and space, delineate them through sensitive design interventions to positively influence the organoleptic decision, by stimulating thoughts and sensations through inducing a different conception of landscape, which fully recovers its tangible and intangible value, leading to an added worth associated to the Colli Piacentini wine.
