NEB Prizes 2021: All Applications

Do you know what happens in Milano when it rains? 
The Seveso river, coming from underground, overflows.
I know, that doesn’t sound good, but… what if it did? 
The Virtual River is the place where the city meets the river.
It is an open canal, above the underground river, that draws a linear park both for the water and the people.
It’s raining: take your raincoat and come and see the temporary stream flowing through our city! 
It’s sunny: take your bike and go with the (virtual) flow!

Brno Design Days is Brno, design and four days of loaded program targets public and also proffesionals from our district. Designers from all over the Czech Republic and abroad meet for the fourth time at our festival, share ideas and know-how and they will introduce design to the general public as a driving force for innovation and several positive changes. Because design is a daily part of our lives.

Circo aéreo is an itinerary installation that explores the underused potential of empty urban spaces and their often inadequate and barren substitute functions. The object re-actives those underused locations by providing a stage for events, and a place to hang out, or rest. 

Additionally, the new intervention generates a sense of care and belonging to the space, hopefully leading to daily cleaning and improved security on the location.

The growing global urge to adapt to climate changes led our team in collaboration with studio Next Institute to provide an urban prototype for the problem. Designed for the city of Brno, the CITY CELL PROTOTYPE is able to collect various data concerning rainwater management and urban greenery in the city.
Featuring seating, a night illumination system, day shading, and wall greenery, the structure is thought as an item of urban furniture made to merge its functions with the public space.

The Distillery’s architectural strategy was designed as a cultural venue to inspire creative confrontation, support innovative ideas and accommodate outstanding events.

Originally a distillate factory, then non-functioning for many decades, the historical building is now being given new life and fresh identity while keeping its story alive.

Within the context of a post-industrial city The Distillery is a representative example of how a vacant property can become a vibrant location in the city.

BlueCity is an international icon of circular economy, a national platform for circular entrepreneurs, and a very visible local accelerator that empowers circular entrepreneurs and inspires citizens. BlueCity is situated in former subtropical swimming oasis Tropicana, a well known iconic building in Rotterdam. To tear it down would be a shame, that is why innovative, sustainable and circular entrepreneurs are now giving new meaning, function and value to 12.000 m2 of deserted swimming pool.

GROUNDS is a coffee hub in Prague’s developing area of Karlín. Tucked inside an inner yard of a vibrant office and residential street, the hub works as a neighborhood cafe where coffee is being served straight from its own roastery. In order to cut the costs but also learn how the architecture and spaces relate to their production processes, the construction was made hands-on and designed-by-building together with the coffee community running the place.
