Architectural Design Competitions are efficient participatory procedures that directly involve a high number of citizens in order to reach optimized solutions for the built environment. The Platform “Architekturwettbewerb.at” is an electronic database offering support to architects and public and private clients with the aim to enhance the use of ADC as a tool to support design and co-creation for more sustainable building and planning processes.

Another city is not only possible but also feasible: On the platform urban degrowth, a complete virtual miniature city becomes visible, through which one can wander. You can discover ideas for climate-just social housing, implementation examples for sufficient mobility, explanatory videos on alternatives to land consumption, and much more. To enable resilient urban design beyond growth, the platform accompanies the journey of innovative and transformative policies from one place to the next.

On December 3, 2020 the Greek State presented the upgraded Acropolis facilities for persons with disabilities: the project included the installation of a new state-of-the-art Inclined Elevator and the refurbishment of two walkways, redesigned by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports and donated by the Onassis Foundation. The program of upgrading all utilities and services on the Acropolis, also included new Lighting, Lightning Protection, Vulnerability Study and Site Risk Management.

“Festivities of the Stones” is a unique concept project, designed and developed by Blossoming Stones, a local citizen movement, based in Lagadia, Arcadia-Greece. It includes a broad array of cultural initiatives, centered upon the regeneration of local traditional stonemasonry and the preservation of local cultural heritage. Activities ran from 2017 to 2019, culminating each summer in a two weeks’ event, engaging the local community, expatriates, and friends sharing its aims and aspirations.

A hidden cistern in the underground of Bacoli, Naples the Piscina Mirabilis is repurposed as a museum. The proposal aims to minimize its interference with all existing, both structural and natural elements allowing a coexistence and a constant change of perception between the newly created and the existing. Through reinterpreting natural elements, an ephemeral material fog, is implemented in the design, concealing, revealing and softening the boundaries of new, old and the art.

The retrofit and extension of Can Portabella, a public community centre in Barcelona, it is the first “Positive” public building in Catalonia. With a negative CO2 balance, it generates more energy than it needs during the year, keeping the standard budget. In 2016 it generated 12.179 kWh and it consumed 11.052kWh.

Cities require the easy movement of people, called their mobility. The ways that people move around a city depend on what is perceived to be the easiest, which results from a complex mixture of socio-environmental, socio-demographic, and socio-psychological factors. . This research focuses on walking in the street space as a form of mobility and its role as a public space critical for social exchange and urban development.

The “Stadsatelier de Ville” is a hybrid meeting spot where students, contractors, architects and policy makers learn to build a circular future together.

Wonen Limburg installed 16 social housing units made almost entirely of glue-free wood. Even the screws are made of wood. The entirely biologically and technically recyclable homes have a fast production process that uses less CO2 than “traditional” construction, and the wood stores CO2. The houses have a high R-value and a comfortable living environment. The residents experience the homes as calming, and there are good acoustics. Frihamnstorget is a co-created container park in the middle of urban Stockholm, where grassroot initiatives, crafts, artists, events and culture meet in a participatory re-shaping of the cityscape. This is a true ”third space” –, neither fully private nor public, curated and maintained by its members, and created by the users.
