NEB Prizes 2021: All Applications

MADE IN is a EU platform for research, design and heritage. It brings together craftspeople, designers, researchers, curators and theorists in search of relevant issues on contemporary production, with the aim of researching and archiving local crafts, conducting participatory programs with craftspeople and designers, and promoting their joint results. MADE IN arose from an awareness of the key role that crafts play in maintaining local identities and the sustainability of local communities.

What if instead of demolition, we de:constructed? And what if this process was conceived not linear, but circular?

At brink of destruction, this project outlines possible new futures of European post-war-mass-constructed-prefab housing, whilst re:using the inherited potential of its material quantities and sites qualities. 
 

Dating back to perhaps 18th century, this site has seen many refurbishhments, that didnt help. Now its time we give a future with high social impact with lowest environmental impact possible. 

Maison Fibre, exhibited at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2021, explores an alternative approach to the design and construction of future habitable spaces. In response to the exhibition theme “How will we live together?”, it presents an inhabitable installation made from robotically produced, fibrous building elements, which can be locally made from just a few kilos of construction material. It constitutes the very first multi-story structure of its kind, with slabs weighing only 9kg/m²!

The functions of the coop made in organisation for people with intellectual disabilities are based on an established knowledge. Frame constructed in golden section is carrying a henhouse - a cube. Ceiling perforations form our galaxy, as many ancient religions believed the universe was created from an egg. As the chickens graze, they can look at a golden egg, with a quote in ancient greek “God always uses geometry”. Hopefully one day a hen will be inspired to start laying golden eggs on her own.

A datapoietic sculpture of a digital plant unites the citizens of Palermo around the health of the Oreto river. Collaboratively fed by citizens, the plant informs us about the health of the water – creating unexpected alliances among humans, artificial intelligence, data and computation to make us more sensitive.

In the middle of pandemics a next step of citizen science is born, enabled by art and innovation: to self-organize, share, connect and take care of the environment in new poetic ways.

Construction and demolition waste represents one-third of the total waste generated in the EU, most of it ending up in a landfill as its final destination. Respect and care for materials and an appreciation of their inherent values can lead us to create new ways of building. Reincarnation is a project based on the upcycling of bricks and ceramic tiles from the city of Barcelona, to create new construction materials for a circular economy, that represent local identity and material stories.

A (pop-up) festival with interdisciplinary exchange, providing a platform for interested people, students and professionals from various disciplines. This will open up a stage for (young) professionals, who contribute with their work and projects, to an inclusive and sustainable society.
The aim of the festival is to create a network of knowledge that will strengthen the local community, who has the courage to research and experiment on new solutions for a caring coexistence.
