NEB Prizes 2022: All Applications

With our project ‘Braunfelser Str.’ and in cooperation with our partner Gewobau, we implemented the in-house developed and patented procedure ‘WoVita’. Next to energy-efficient retrofitting, this procedure puts aging and an easily accessible habitation into the focus of the renovation. By this we create an environment that provides optimal comfort levels to older and physically restricted tenants. The additional storey up of the existing building is valuable in generating needed housing space.

Industrial waste material – gray sandstone slabs with countless irregular cuts became the leitmotiv of the Memorial Park, symbolizing the ruins of the Great Synagogue (1863-1939) destroyed during WWII and the paths of life of the multicultural community that were once criss-crossing in this place. This „cut-in-stone” history of Oświęcim, the Great Synagogue and the ruins remaining after its destruction aims at preserving the memory of the past, with a warning message for the future.

The project proposes to occupy an unoccupied courtyard for years. The proposal opens up new possibilities, new routes, a new space of centrality, of free appropriation, a space of socialization, a space that transforms the way of using and living the school and recovers the sense of community and belonging.

A prefabricated construction system made of locally sourced CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) plywood allows the construction during the two months of summer holidays.

AB is characterized by the adaptation of the architecture to the surroundings: the bay between the Torres River, the Sant Josep stream and the cove, with the mountainous backdrop. The buildings, like imposing trees, rise on a stone pedestal and display their sinuous and organic forms that make up the large terraces at different heights. The philosophy of listening to and integrating the landscape is visible both in the forms and in the materials and colors drawn from the original landscape.

The planted facade ecosystem for greywater treatment makes resource streams, closed water cycles, climate mitigation, facade greening and biodiversity measures tangible and experiencable for users, neighbours, strollers and fellow citizens. FREIRAUMLABOR is a Berlin-Neukölln based inclusive, interdisciplinary and above all creative research and documentation initiative. Together with the local neighbourhood, we want to capture, understand and discuss ideas on how a future use of the former school garden at Neuköllner Dammweg could look like within the context of its history as a green educational space and the current infrastructural needs formulated by the authorities.

Maman la plus belle is an aromatic sculpture shaped as a boat (5x5x5 meters) set in Planoise district of Besançon, France. It is a place of cultures, of encounters where the artist offers ecological practices and aesthetic experiences for all audiences and at all ages. The sculpture incorporates composting bins to make it self-fertilized through citizen’s participation. It was carried out with the support of public authorities.
