NEB Prizes 2022: All Applications

Libavsko is a part of the hills of northern Moravia. The landscape of fields and windmills, nurtured for centuries, has gone through a complex history that resulted in the post-war displacement of the vast majority of the locals. They were replaced by people for whom the landscape never really became home. The decaying villages and fields reflect the fate of the Sudetenland, whose problems still affect our society. We can learn a lot about ourselves on a journey through the Atlas of Emptiness.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used to lower carbon footprint of buildings, by optimizing form, and helping decision making during design process. Machine learning can be used to select optimal solutions resulting in zero or negative carbon footprint in the lifecycle of the building. AI can also improve circular strategies that aim at increasing reducing, reusing and recycling of building components. 

Alork is a box designed in aluminum and cork with the aim of eliminating from circulation the polystyrene containers currently used in the fishing industry. Alork is sustainable because unlike polystyrene boxes it is not disposable but can be reused indefinitely as it can be sterilized. Furthermore, once its life cycle has ended, aluminum and cork are easily recyclable. This project can be easily adapted to the food and pharmaceutical industry.

A space for those adolescent and young adult cancer patients, who can neither enjoy the normal confines of regular life nor be fully subjected to the sanitised walls and machines of medical institutions, a blanket vision for every cancer patient. They exist in the liminal space between lively normalities and an enduring frailty. Our concept investigates into this social space, whose articulation merits to not only be vocalised but also physically manifested.

What happens to our textile waste? How can we turn it into a community resource? Circular economy, textile recycling chain, conscious citizenship and social entrepreneurship are complex concepts that come to us as answers. Yet this is possible only when they are turned into daily practices. This project will merge them and give life to a virtuous circle of concrete initiatives that contribute to the growth of a more inclusive and sustainable society.

For three young designers, an artistic residency led to a year of advocating for the preservation of the Cultural Landscape of moated homesteads they helped unveil in Southwest Flanders.

They established the Eiland Collective and are now designing different initiatives to help grow an ecosystem of communities involved in shifting the development goals of their local environment. They want to explore sustainable design practices that rely on a newly-found sense of belonging. 

Becoming a parent is a huge life event. On social media it looks great, beautiful pictures of lovely babies. Can someone post the reality please? In this project we focus on the emotional wellbeing of women during the transition to motherhood. During this rollercoaster mothers (to be) experience different emotions, stress and anxiety. For us it is important to address the needs of this (vulnerable) group of women and make sure they get the support they need en deserve! 

We suggest to redefined space in-between physical and mental edges characterize the landscape of Val Pusteria and uncover the issues caused by the intense agriculture, economic growth and globalization. Concept of Edges, as a method of analysis, shows an opportunity to address and re-imagine these areas in tension to reduce inequalities, to develop a network of sustainable and resilient cities and rural areas by emphasizing the peculiarities and local identity of physical and social boundaries.

Rebuilding the Edge is a mapping exercise. It is a reprogramming strategy for struggling towns along an infrastructural reinvestment project. It is also a design project for a single station along the rail that can maximize a town’s ability to capitalize on incoming economic activity. This project is only the beginning of a Liminal's research initiative in partnership with Fondazione Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, MIT's UrbanRisk Lab and the municipality of Pettorano sul Gizio.

The project emphasizes the need to maximize the use of resources. The lamp is divided into visual elements and electronic components. This allows the user to change the colors or the visual form and keep the electronics and lampshade. For the production of the visual part of the lamps, I used a biodegradable binder designed by me and materials created during various production processes.
