NEB Prizes 2024: All Applications

The Ukrainian Architectural Studio A.PASHENKO have developed seven typical projects of social infrastructure for the rebuilding of Ukraine. The project was implemented within the framework of the Ukraine Recovery Program (URP) — a framework loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB). The projects include three schools, three kindergartens and an administrative services centre, and can be used by local municipalities for free, saving considerably time and money in the reconstruction efforts.

The gymnasium building is designed for up to 700 students. Only 10-12th grade students will study in this school. The school building is designed taking into account the age groups of students, so that it is engaging and interesting, but at the same time maintaining the requirements necessary for the specific profile. The sports building is functionally connected to the school building. There is an athletics arena, with a team playing fields located inside the track circle.

The game “Democracy 2084” is designed to strengthen people’s understanding of democratic values and processes. It is an escape room game that creates a dystopian vision of the collapse of a democratic state with purpose of the game is to show its players what life would be like without democratic values and what difficulties would they have to face if democratic systems no longer existed. The game is designed in a modular format, which makes it portable.

We are rebuilding, renewing, and creating a beautiful, sustainable, prosperous future for building back better Ukraine. Our multidisciplinary urban recovery project aims at implementing comprehensive recovery programs and action plans based on the collection of an actual evidence databases, a holistic analysis of all areas of the municipality's life, building scenarios of potential ways of recovery and further development, and involving the community, local authorities and international experts.

The project aims to promote care of the environment, and in particular of the pollinators at risk for pesticides and climate changes: butterflies and bees. The main goal is to foster awareness among young people about the world they live in. The target group is students aged 14 to 18 and the specific objectives are to develop a new vision of the world where care, cooperation and inclusion are as fundamental value. The protagonists of APIAMO project are 7 students with special needs.

In celebration of the European Green Capital year, Tallinn’s Strategic Management Office’s Spatial Planning and Design Department team members designed a multi-purpose re-usable pop-up park to reactivate the public space of the UNESCO-heritage medieval town center. The goal was to create a non-commercial public space to provide seating and actitivities, and set the stage for various culture events taking place at the Old Town Square.

"Los sentidos" The senses therapeutical garden introduces nature into the urban environment, bringing an innovative professional therapeutic service to promote community, less loneliness, and health. With the interests of Cosladas community at its center, it offers a meeting place where everyone is respected and accepted, where the professional hands facilitate the union between young and old, disabled and healthy, happiness and sorrow. A space where everyone gets help feeling that they belong.

In 2022 a young group of architectural engineers founded Office for the New Earth, an NGO to build Healing Spaces for children in refugee camps involving their communities. Guided by biophilic and trauma-informed design these interventions in Cyprus and Greece are safe spaces for refugee children, in which they can feel relaxed, nurture their curiosity, play and expand their imagination.

The team found that the playground is a place of psychosocial suffering, with moments of fear and conflict that children are unable to manage. As a result, they are less available for learning and are at greater risk of dropping out of school.
This project has enabled teachers in the various countries involved to develop methods and strategies to make this free and recreational time healthier, so that pupils are more available for learning in line with local realities.
