NEB Prizes 2021: All Applications

LIMBO was the first architecture virtual exhibition on Instagram.

From March 18 to April 18, 2021, twenty architecture projects,that were not build and fell into oblivion, were selected to be part of a new exhibition format on Instagram. Using IG filters as a tool, this exhibition generated new architectural virtual realities and spatial experiences accesible to everybody.

LIMBO was an exercise of visibility for all these projects made by architects that, for some reason, were never built.

Lea is an autonomous and robotic growing system for fruits and vegetables that aims to integrate part of the agricultural production in the city to fight deforestation. As a matter of fact, 80% of forests are cut down to be converted into agricultural land. The higher goal is to reduce the destructive impact on the planet caused by excessive consumerism using a circular economy that is economically and environmentally sustainable.
 

Whalter Whale filter is a system that allows to purify tap water in order to limit and possibly stop the water plastic bottle waste that is a burden for both land and especially water environment where a lot of marine animals suffer and die because of plastic waste.

The aim of the project is to create a sustainable water filter to purify tap water and help to raise the awareness towards environmental problems.

Villa Berg – the historical monument is going to be renovated and a new wing added. A living monument, it will continue to be used as a cultural institution. A new concept ensures that the future “Open house for Music and More” will attract a much wider and much more diverse audience. The restored villa will come alive again in a new way. Additionally, the new building will be designed with all the latest requirements for use as a cultural venue in mind.

Project Twinst Save the Sea consist in twin innovative designer shopping trolleys created to enhance eco-sustainability in retail chains.
1. Twinst BAG: makes easy shopping with reusable bags to reduce usage of disposable bags
2. Twinst BASKET: trolley with basket of plastic coming from recycling, promotes recovery of plastic waste giving it a second life
Twinst BAG has a version for disables in wheelchairs, so it enhances social inclusion &  equalises  the handicappeds' opportunities

T·YARN redesigns systems in the textile industry by activating local garment waste as a raw material for fabrication. We transform discarded t-shirts into yarns that we optimize for digital and manufacturing machines such as knitting, weaving and rope making. By reusing high quality fibers and harvesting all possible colours from waste, our design process revolutionises the notion of recycled textiles, while sketching production models for a more sustainable local textile landscape.

We will develop neighbourhood-level energy concepts, through the total renovation of a specific old existing building, based on the existing urban development strategies and taking into account the goals and resources allocated in the economic development and climate and energy plans. Approaching the most common building types and ownership structure, the demonstration projects will support social innovation and ensure high replicability in the district close to the center of Athens. 

The Itinerary aims to seed the Culture of the Bauhaus of the Seas in the University of Algarve and surrounding communities anchored in the Ria Formosa-Coastal Lagoon. This was fostered by an interdisciplinary project, bound artists, managers, and scientists around the preservation of an iconic species the SeaHorse-Hippocampus and its habitat the seagrasses threatened by anthropogenic and climate changes. In this reinvented place citizens may share a reconciling attitude with the sea-nature righs

The living area of Meden Rudnik residential complex has always been one of the most challenging areas in Burgas, Bulgaria and threatened by exclusion and segregation due to its remote location, depreciated and poorly developed infrastructure, limited number of schools, kindergartens and places for adolescents. Currently, the residential complex is ranked in the top 10 in the rankings for the best developed neighborhoods in major cities in Bulgaria.

The Plastic for Good challenge brings together 15 creative minds from all over the world to showcase the possibilities of recycled plastic as a valuable resource that allows designers and makers to create meaningful products. A collaboration between Distributed Design Platform and Precious Plastic, co-funded by Creative Europe.
