NEB Prizes 2023: All Applications

We revived the forgotten values of Dunaújváros in a new festival. Once the Ironworks Street was the essence of the place; the elegant avenue with its colourful shop windows was filled with well-dressed families on weekend afternoons. There are many cultural treasures to be discovered here, some of which have now been forgotten. Our aim is to revive these, while also discovering new values that could shape the kind of city that locals want to live in in the future.

In one month, over 200.000 visitors experienced the Rotterdam Rooftop Walk. Stairways attached to the exterior of buildings provided access to monumental rooftops, connected by a bridge suspended 30 metres above the city’s main thoroughfare. This installation and exhibition presented an urban landscape where public space continues on the rooftop level, uncovering the untapped potential of rooftop space in Rotterdam as well as other densely populated cities worldwide.

Each day on the Outdoor Office Day hundreds are taking work outdoors in the (urban) nature. On this day we are meeting with colleagues in nearby city parks, reconnect with the nature, maken phone calls while walking or organise #weetings (walking meetings) with groups of colleagues and associates. Outdoor Office Day encourages people to spend a day in urban green spaces to read, write, discuss, connect and, above all, learn from each other.

Impact Hub Berlin is home to a new generation of impact entrepreneurs building solutions for people and the planet. Located in the heart of Berlin with community coworking, offices, and maker labs, the space embodies circular thinking in all aspects of its creation and operation. The building is a showcase for sustainability and inclusive design, from its accessible layout to its energy use and zero-waste café.

A self-sufficient city? Many people were sceptical when we started designing and creating edible landscapes that build relationships between people and wildlife. But a few private homes and a "food park" later perceptions shifted, and obstacles became possibilities! It's possible to create multifunctional urban landscapes that reframe cities. Abundance - of wildlife and food - is just a shift in perception away. All we need is to help nature tell its own story, and the shift will follow!

Architecture can play a big role in improving our society; this thought has guided us during the long and twisty journey that led to the design of Articolo32. This project wanted to have have a fast and widespread impact in our cities by helping to solve an increasing problem: how to provide healt and social assisstence to those who are unable to access the canonical services. The design is divided in two parts: a strategy that can be applied in different contexts and an application of it.

Fungi, in their controversial cultural and biological role, become mediators in an interspecies shift in fashion design practices. Their growing application for industrial experimentation, art, visual communication, and literature, mark an ontological turn. They symbolise the possibility to reconfigure the ecosystemic balance in today’s dangerously anthropized world. Capable to overcome issues linked to sustainable production, consumption, and to guide towards a renewed human-non-human bound.

My personal interpretation of Post-Post-Modernism aims to connect the materiality and emotionality of primitive, ancient and traditional architecture with the dynamics of contemporary buildings. A novel type of monolithic aesthetics is developed that belongs neither to the past, nor to the present, nor to the future and is therefore timeless.

Roofscapes transforms untapped pitched roofs into green and accessible spaces as a way to mitigate urban heat islands, anchor biodiversity, catch storm water, and provide new outdoor spaces in European city centres. Thanks to prefabricated timber modules and without demolishing existing buildings, Roofscapes helps European cities adapt to our century’s social and environmental challenges.
