Project Description

I have initiated the admission of children with special needs in Public Music Schools in Sarajevo. Before that, never in the history of their existence (the schools) over 75 years, children with special needs couldn't attend any sort of formal music education, no matter how talented and great they were. Doing that for my own son I have spent more than 6 months to accomplish that task. I had to convince the Ministry of Education, had meetings with all the directors from all Music Schools, etc.

Description of the project

Summary

The main summary is that since the 2022/2023 School year, children with special needs can get a formal education in Music Schools and so far some kids are admitted into schools. They play instruments, have their concerts, and enjoy equality. They finally have a chance to show their talents and hard work to the world.

Key objectives for sustainability

After providing them with a chance to learn, to build their talents, tomorrow they can and they will be a great musicians that will live from their own work, playing music. Some great pianists among them are born! It is unacceptable to take away those chances from them just because they are kids with autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy etc...

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

So far, the kids had the concerts already, and they rock!!! Their self-confidence is amazing as well as the respond from their public. They are astonished with the results!

Key objectives for inclusion

This is a new societal model in my Country. Even we do have an inclusion in the schools, (partly) we never did it in Music Schools. Affordability is just same, kids are learning and studying just like the rest of the pupils. The Ministry had obligation to employ the assistants and on my initiative they did.

Results in relation to category

The direct benefits are for the children. But indirect beneficiaries may be huge. For the Schools, developing the models, the methodologies, building the capacities, etc.., but the whole society is on the benefit. Kids today are grownup people tomorrow, needing to be employed, recognized as equal citizens, not on social care.

How Citizens benefit

Children with special needs are citizens of my Country just like anywhere in the world. It's just that The Country system had forgotten them and didn't count on their talents. The impact on all of society is huge!

Innovative character

Innovative as can be. Before my initiative, no one ever even tried to include all children in the Musical Schools.

Disciplines/knowledge reflected

Never, ever in the history of Sarajevo have children with special needs had a concert with @tipical@ kids. Now they did!! They play and learn together. They don't fear anymore, they make friendships, and the teacher has some new opportunities to educate more, to provide more, and to do a better job. We strongly increased the value of inclusion and equal chances for all.

Methodology used

I m fully aware of the fact this sounds crazy but my methodology was to put all my heart into this, to spend some time insisting, talking, searching for answers, and not to let anyone tell me what I'm allowed to dream, what my child is allowed to dram. We dream big!

How stakeholders are engaged

The Ministry of Education of KS accepted my initiative and they provide assistants. Also, we have further steps in how to provide other resources for the Music Schools to improve their job and to work with Children

Global challenges

Actually this is great solution for the whole region. Simple as that!

Learning transferred to other parties

Other parents and organizations want to do the same in other parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina. People calling me from Tuzla, Zenica, Bihac, etc...
