Rehabilitation and enlargement of three old fishermen houses as new headquarters and I+D centre for the University of Vigo in the historical centre of the city
Key objectives for sustainability
Some years ago the University decided to move their buildings 10km away from the city to an isolation campus. The selection of this new plot is perhaps the first point in terms of sustainability; to bring the university into the city, close to the civil neighboorhood allow them to avoid the use of mechanical conexions to the campus.
The second point is related to the sustainability of reusing old buildings with new purposes, with recicled km0 materials as wood and near to get NZEB because of the passive design.
Key objectives for aesthetics and quality
The traditional seaside architecture and techniques inspire our design.
We keep the old stone archs and put over them the new wood structure with the lattice for sun impact as if were the traditional galleries.
We use wood also in the interior, but in this case with contemporary assemblies made of contra laminated wood .
Key objectives for inclusion
Obviously, as a new building, the construction is completely accessible.
The fact of bringing some activities of the university to the town allowed the neighboorhood to get new cultural or scientific knolegment. The called "University for the elderly", dedicated to continuos training, is perhaps the most representative aspect of this buildint
Results in relation to category
We can reuse and rehabilitate traditional buildings with new techniques but inspire in our cultural and integrateing new into old.
How Citizens benefit
Not only several administrations have been involved in this project, but also some civil orgaizations. We, or the university technical office, have had several meetings with the historical city neighboorhood organization, the university community or even the architects association to get their opinion in terms of use or even technical criteria.
Innovative character
We use new techniques, as contra laminated wood, to rehabilitate old buildings, not only to build new ones.
