Project Description

beyondLAB is a concept of a place for many future dimensions. beyondLAB is more than a promise of urban regeneration, context revitalization or new public space. beyondLAB_Research Center focused on Urban Mobility, came from The New European Bauhaus initiative statement and its promising strategies. Also, both the concept and the proposed site(in Bucharest) complete the city`s needs. beyondLAB started as a concept for an architecture thesis project but became a purpose of a soon-to-be architect.

Description of the project

Summary

beyondLAB_a Research Center focused on Urban Mobility is based on a concept-frame that was initiated by a city`s(Bucharest) pressing problem(mobility) and was developed around a site presenting a series of needs and an on-going initiative: a process of revitalization of the river(Dambovita) banks. This process also sustains the proposed process of regenerating a former gas station site.

The presence of the Dambovita river generated the main focus of the dynamic of the new public and green space. The site is also situated next to a public transportation node: bus, tram and metro stations, making it suitable for a project of a Center which its main purpose is to offer an example of how we can live in the city now and how a city can become citizen-friendly.

The context is making the initiative aware of how a new building can and should be integrated into the exiting surroundings by keeping in mind that the project should see the future in a more sustainable way. The main focus of this concept, this project for a research center is in contributing to the process of regeneration of an area that is only vehicle centered, less public, pedestrian and citizen-friendly-oriented for its position and visibility in the city`s life.

If there`s five key phrases to describe beyondLAB those would be: responsible model, city and citizens, common-ground, public dynamic and gathered for a promising tomorrow.

Key objectives for sustainability

The pressing problem at the city scale, the one that initiated the concept: the problem of how we(simply citizens) understand the city mobility topic, should be discussed and we should come up with ideas to make next generation`s tomorrow not only promising, but livable. The city of Bucharest needs some urgent strategies regarding the congestion, traffic, mobility related topics.

beyondLAB_A Research Center focused on Urban Mobility does not promise that it can solve by itself the city scale problems but does hope that by gathering together experts(national and international) and people(simply citizens) there would be shaped a better understanding of how we can live and will live for a sustainable tomorrow.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

The project is still in an undeveloped phase but there are some concepts of how the exhibition can be experienced by integrating new ways of visualizing the future realities, possibilities and how the developed strategies would look like. Also, by choosing wood as its main structure material, beyondLAB wishes to offer an example of how we can contribute to an unexpected public-oriented building in the context of Bucharest City.

Key objectives for inclusion

By bridging the different worlds: expertise(specialists), experience and opinions(citizens), beyondLAB can be a place where the know-how will be used for shaping a common-ground. Also, by being responsible and aware of its urban context, beyondLAB should be a project that blends into and completes its surroundings: built environment and public space, contributing also into adding a green area.

Results in relation to category

Combined with the on-going initiative for revitalizing the river banks, beyondLAB is meant to expand the area of this process, it contributes by offering more public and green space but also by gathering a function specialized in finding solutions for an integrated strategy at a city-scale thinking.

How Citizens benefit

Still being a concept, the benefits of its implementation are only some presumptions of how the project can make a point into citizens` life. But by looking closely at the present dynamic of the topic, into day-to-day life of the citizens of Bucharest, there is something certain: people are more interested and a wide strategy would make it clear for them on what and how they should understand the city`s future dynamic.

Innovative character

By coming together, experts and citizens, national and international specialists, and by mediating a less formal communication (exhibition and workshops) beyondLAB can be seen as an innovative way of researching and documenting a topic that promises a better tomorrow, a well integrated and focused initiative.
