Description of the project
Summary
Urban space today seems to be for the most people a hostile space. Everyday life is an odyssey of survival of the inhabitants who live and work in urban areas, in nightmarish cities, in cities that kill people, in cities that are monsters. The daily catalytic way from the living space to other places is getting bigger and bigger. When this movement is forced through amorphous or hostile spaces, the person is psychologically affected and reacts in many ways: indifference, tendency to destroy and pollute the environment, passivity . The organization of space expresses and influences social relations. The humanization of space can only be done through social collective action, by the humanization of man. Man has the ability to create space, to face those forces that make the city a foreign environment and push urbanization in streets and directions foreign to the individual and collective purpose. This can be achieved by pedestrians moving, in safe and comfortable places, such as pedestrian walk ways. It can give the public space human character. Combining them with key points of the road, such as bus stops, can upgrade the built environment and satisfy the needs of users, with the aim of their behaviors changing and mentality. Because the improvement of the environment in which they live directly concerns them.
The idea is the design and installation of a bus stop, and the renovation of a pedestrian walkway adjacent to it able to satisfy all users' needs at Academia Street in the center of Athens. Moreover, the aim is to stand out among the common bus stops while highlighting the connection between excellent sustainability and artistic design. Reference is made to bus stops on Akadimias Street, in the city of Athens, with emphasis on the need to change their design, due to the problems faced by citizen users. The design idea, the purpose and the specifications of the installation, the method, the design and objects.
Key objectives for sustainability
Along with the usability and ergonomic purposes of the bus stop, the resulting creation should be energy independent and enviromentally friendly. This can be accomplished by harvesting the renewable energy sources that are abundant in Greece Hence it is deemed mandatory that the energy requirement of the bus stop will be satisfied mostly by sunlight and that the city's power grid will be used supplementary only during bad weather conditions .
The installation will abide by the principles of an installation powered by sunlight. All the materials which will be used ,will be ecofriendly.
Key objectives for aesthetics and quality
The way of construction contradicts the neoclassical character of the adjacent buildings without interfering with their aesthetics. The building employs a modern curvy design inspiring a sense of flow as you walk on the sidewalk. The building's color is white so as not to impose on the surrounding area given the size of the building. Items are designed to be encompassed in the installation and work together.
Key objectives for inclusion
Driven by personal experience and analyzing the results of a questionnaire which was put to citizens-users of a specific urban stop on Akadimias Street, regarding the specifications of an urban stop, I conceived the idea of creating a stop, which will meet all their requirements, so that waiting for the bus is a pleasant experience. During the elaboration of the work, the need arose to renovate the space behind the bus stop, which is a pedestrian street, offering them rest, shading and protection in specific conditions e.g. rain, intense sunshine.
-It will have sufficient space to cover a large number of users, since it is located on a busy street-passage in the center of Athens.
-It will offer enough protection from the sun.
-It will provide adequate lighting during the night, so that one can expect to be safe, but also to perform some actions.
-Users will be provided with continuous updates and information on bus schedules,
the weather of the current week and the temperature via electronic screens, which will be
powered by photovoltaic energy, in order to save energy.
-It will have bicycle parking spaces.
-It will provide sufficient space for comfortable movement for the disabled.
-It will be a solid and durable construction, with heavy immovable elements, in cases of
extreme weather conditions and violent incidents during marches and mobilizations.
- The station is accessible and usable by all people with disabilities.
Innovative character
Driven by personal experience and analyzing the results of a questionnaire which was put to citizens-users of a specific urban stop on Akadimias Street, regarding the specifications of an urban stop, I conceived the idea of creating a stop, which will meet all their requirements, so that waiting for the bus is a pleasant experience. The installation does not need to use electricity as it is autonomous due to the solar panels that have been installed on its roof and provide electricity for the screens it contains and the lighting. During the elaboration of the work, the need arose to renovate the space behind the bus stop, which is a pedestrian street, offering them rest, shading and protection in specific conditions e.g. rain, intense sunshine.
