Description of the project
Summary
The French architect and designer Sophie Dries created a scenography for the 2019 edition of the Belgian Fair Collectible, which is here revisited at the Boutique of the Museum of Decorative Arts for an exhibition dedicated to the young designer.
Sophie Dries created a type of natural landscape for the installation, where asbtract volumes are emerging from the main organic shapes
These volumes will serve as an exhibition space where the young designers will showcase their creations.
The white color was chosen to be use as an abstract statement ans was toasted in different textures ans finishes.
The enamel plates will be very glossy, whereas the foam will be very matte and light absorbing.
The plastic flakes, rich in texture, take on the light in small diffuse spots.
To have such a neutral tone will also allow the scenography not to overwhelm the designers’ works, which are the main purpose of the show.
The architect and her team, Arthur Cany and Marta Gruca (acope studio) participated in the creation and the completion of this minimalist exhibition design project.
Key objectives for sustainability
The project is based on the concept of upcycling : the materials used in the installation are either waste materials that are unused or unwanted in their current form, which are given a new purpose by becoming the products of the installation.
Three companies have partnered with the architect by providing the materials to use for the setup :
-Plasticiet is providing the discarded plastic that resembles stones for the creation of the organic shapes on the ground.
-Emaillerie belge is providing enameled steel plates that will be used as the table top of the volumes on which the objects will be laid.
-And finally, Vrijdaghs is providing the foam that will serve as these volume’s bases, this will be recycled into flakes for the upholstery.
All the materials will be reuses after the end of the show for other and new purposes.
This project is part of a "ZERO WASTE" philosophy, while the multiplication of fairs and event formats generate a mass of considerable waste.
Key objectives for aesthetics and quality
This scenography was conceived in such a way as to highlight as much as possible the work of the young designers selected for the exhibition.
To do this, Sophie Dries created a landscape with recycled materials in total abstraction. This allows the scenography not to take charge of the works and therefore not to be too present.
Key objectives for inclusion
This project was presented at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris during Paris Design Week 2019. This exhibition was completely free and therefore open to all.
The objective of this exhibition was to showcase the know-how and the creation of young designers.
Results in relation to category
We have worked on the concept of "zero waste", we hope that this approach has enabled people to present at the exhibition a questioning of their lifestyle, of the benefits of recycling.
We are aware that raw materials are not unlimited and that to preserve nature we need to reinvent ourselves. this is why we have worked on recycled and recyclable materials in order to avoid waste.
How Citizens benefit
We have worked on the concept of "zero waste", we hope that this approach has enabled people to present at the exhibition a questioning of their lifestyle, of the benefits of recycling.
Innovative character
The innovative side of the project is that it's based on the principe of Upcycling, we use recycled materials ans they will all be reused later to give them another life.
