Project Description
The very best parties usually leave us with a mess and confetti on the floor. And like the great memories we get from such celebrations, the Chaos Rug will bring joy and happiness into your daily life. Yet the item is made out of the rug industry’s leftover yarn. The base of this linen rug is hand-tufted with one-colour yarns, then the weaver selects the rest of the details from the leftovers. Chaos Rug is made from 100% linen that has hypoallergenic features.

The very best parties usually leave us with a mess and confetti on the floor. And like the great memories we get from such celebrations, the CHAOS rug will bring joy and happiness into your daily life. Yet, the item is made out of the rug industry’s leftover yarn. The base of this linen rug is hand-tufted with one-color yarns; then, the weaver selects the rest of the details from the leftovers. Every single rug is therefore uniquely colored and made from 100% linen that has hypoallergenic features. Available in two sizes (2x2 m and 2.5 x 2.5 m) and two different background colors (dark blue and caramel brown).
Key objectives for sustainability
Chaos Rug contributes to a sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle as it is made of natural materials and uses leftover yarn from the rugs industry.
Designer Audronė Drungilaitė came up with this idea when she was involved in the "Interreg" project "EcoDesign Circle", together with design centers from the Baltic Sea Region.
During the project, Audronė visited a rug factory in the periphery of Lithuania and figured out that there are some leftovers in their linen rugs production — when the factory is making huge carpets, some colors cannot be used due to some defects. The owner of the factory said that recycling is quite complicated because afterward, the yarn is not the same quality. That is why Audronė decided to create a rug from these leftovers and use them for the greater good.
As Chaos rug is made from 100% linen, it is an eco-friendly product, too. Moreover, linen is a high-quality, long-lasting material, so the rug is ready to serve generations to come.
Key objectives for aesthetics and quality
Aesthetics
The pattern of this rug was inspired by colourful confetti, as seen in Vilnius Old Town on a Sunday morning. As the item is made of the rug industry’s leftover yarn, every rug is uniquely colored. Chaos is available in two sizes (2x2 m and 2.5 x 2.5 m) and two different background colors (dark blue and caramel brown).
Quality of experience
The rug is created by a professional industrial designer Audronė Drungilaitė, developed together with an experienced designed studio EMKO, and produced by a local rugs manufacturer. All parties involved in making this rug have lots of experience in their field; their work is appreciated in local and international markets, competitions, and events.
Key objectives for inclusion
All the production processes of the Chaos rug take place in Lithuania (this way trying to make a smaller CO2 footprint) and involve local businesses and creators:
- The manufacturer of Chaos rug is a small family-owned rug factory located near Panevėžys, Lithuania.
- The rug is designed by a young Lithuanian designer (under 30 years old).
- EMKO is a Lithuanian-based furniture design and home-accessory company with roots set in the ancient Baltic tradition of craftsmanship. EMKO aims to highlight both — exceptional design of local creators and the rising potential of Lithuanian manufacturers.
Results in relation to category
Chaos Rug is submitted for the "Products and life style" category, which is looking for products and processes that contribute to a sustainable, attractive, and inclusive lifestyle.
As mentioned in this application, Chaos Rug meets these values with its unique concept, production techniques, and expertise of the team.
How Citizens benefit
- Chaos Rug is made from 100% linen that has hypoallergenic features. This way, the rug does not cause any allergies and is suitable to use even for the most sensitive people.
- For a few years already, EMKO studio is collaborating with the local charity initiative (Rimanto Kaukėno paramos fondas), helping children diagnosed with cancer. 2% from every Chaos Rug purchased is donated to this foundation.
Innovative character
To a rug with a one-color ground (caramel or royal blue), one can add contrasting tufts from the scrap materials available that day. Each rug is unique, but guidelines ensure consistency. There are always three pile heights within each 2 or 2.5 square metres rug, and the colorful yarns are divided into seven groups.
This way, the rug not only contributes to the sustainable, attractive, and inclusive lifestyle, but also promotes the possibilities of the natural linen material and craftsmanship of the local manufacturer.
