Description of the project

Summary

Wieser House in Terezin - from the ruin to the pearl!

Artistic photodocumentation of the complete process of rescuing one of the proudest buildings in Terezín, a national cultural monument. The focus of the entire documentation is on the work of the restorers and craftsmen who, over the course of 2,5 years, with their skills, energy and sensitivity, saved and made this architectural gem available and useful to thefuture generations.

The main aim of the documentation is to bring this meritorious achievement to the attention of the general public in an eye-catching form. Most of the restoration and construction work which are necessary to save cultural monuments (which we so often admire), is completely unknown to the general public.

The photodocumentation will at least reveal some of the secrets of those "nameless ones" who, through their honest, often very demanding and highly professional work, contribute to the preservation of historical and artistic values on a daily basis and are the true saviors of cultural heritage. The photographs are intended not only to highlight the importance and the urgent need for long-term sustainability and quality care of cultural heritage, but also to arouse the interest of the young generation in particular in the restoration and handicraft professions, where skilled and quality craftsmen have been rapidly declining in recent years.

The results of this extensive work, carried out over the course of 36 months, are intended primarily for all appropriate and meaningful forms of presentations - exhibitions, lectures, publications, magazines, TV, new media, etc. - to the widest possible lay and professional public. In addition to illustrating the rescue of this particular architectural treasure of Terezín, are the photodocumentation and its contents intended to symbolize and represent a new, comprehensive initiative to support the long-term sustainable revitalization of the entire city – “From the ruin to the pearl”.

Key objectives for sustainability

The results of this extensive work, carried out over the course of 36 months, are intended primarily for all appropriate and meaningful forms of presentations - exhibitions, lectures, publications, magazines, TV, new media, etc. - to the widest possible lay and professional public. In addition to illustrating the rescue of this particular architectural treasure of Terezín, are the photodocumentation and its contents intended to symbolize and represent a new, comprehensive initiative to support the long-term sustainable revitalization of the entire city – “From the ruin to the pearl”.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

Photographs of all three parts of the documentation:

1.  Ruin
2. Thesis
3. Rescued building

are in addition to their content, conceived aesthetically so as to arouse interest and attract the attention of the widest possible public, especially the general public. Therefore, the aim is not only to inform in an unusual way about the process of saving the building by means of photographs of the work process, but also to enable the public to discover the artistic and historical quality of the building through motifs that emphasise these values (e.g. details of the ceiling painting, which even a visitor to the building will not be able to discover in their full glory due to the great distance).

Also, the technical quality of all the photographs supports this part of the whole project. The high resolution of the original digital data guarantees not only first-class possibilities for computer editing and print processing, but also large-format prints for exhibitions or interior and exterior decoration.

Through exhibitions of large-format photographs, especially in public space, it will therefore be possible to multiply the aesthetic and technical advantages of documentation and thus fulfil the main objectives much more.

Key objectives for inclusion

Whichever of the above mentioned options for presenting the photodocumentation, we naturally also address the citizens of the town and the region. Through this dialogue, we actively involve the relevant participants in the gradual revitalisation of the city and the region and their development in this long-term process.

Due to the negative impact of the Cov19 pandemic, we have had to significantly reduce this part of our activities in the past 14 months. It is only in the second half of this year that we will be able to continue the process of integrating the widest possible public in full. We are planning further ongoing meetings with the citizens of the city and the surrounding area with the aim of their active involvement and participation in the urban renewal initiative.

How Citizens benefit

Due to the aforementioned significant restrictions on our activities due to the Cov19 pandemic over the past 14 months and the fact that the extensive photo documentation was only completed earlier this year, we will not be able to begin to assess the potential for its full use and application until late this year and early next year.

At the beginning of 2020, before the outbreak of the pandemic, we could only carry out the first meeting and presentation of the ongoing documentation with the citizens and the city leadership. We plan to establish and continue this dialogue from September this year.

Innovative character

What is innovative about this part of our large and comprehensive initiative to support the revitalization of the entire city, is the form, content and quality of the completed photo documentation and its use, in particular, to seek and attract partners and supporters of the entire initiative through dialogue.
