Project Description

How is it possible to create at the very least a soothing space in surroundings where warm air currents and radiant sunlight are the norm? Accepting the geo-climatic reality of the Mediterranean coastline as its starting point, “Tempo Piano” designs passive cooling systems that create cool, tranquil domestic living spaces. These ritualised objects involve the body, water and air in defining new concepts of time.

Description of the project

Summary

My project has as a starting point, a place, a climate, an atmosphere which is familiar to me, that of the Mediterranean coast. I wonder about the way of living in this place in summer when the heat becomes more and more worrying. It is at the meeting point between observations and experience that I wonder about the way to concentrate at least the creation of a cool and temperate space, in a place where hot air currents and radiant sun are omnipresent.

The evaporation, the creation of shade or the circulation of air become principles that allow me to consider through supple surfaces, passive cooling systems within our interior spaces in order to generate a feeling of freshness and soothing for the body.I propose through my project ''Tempo Piano'' simple textile surfaces of installation answering the need for a Mediterranean climate, changing with the hot and persistent summer and this around three axes.

I wish to propose a new way of apprehending the ground surface which is a space to be privileged during the strong heats, because the temperature is much fresher there, which is explained by the density of the cold air which remains at the level of the ground, contrary to the current of lighter hot air which tends to rise naturally. For my second axis, I develop an air permeable material, able to keep humidity as long as possible in order to decrease the air temperature. My last approach is the refreshment by the sensitive, that is to say, how the visual can influence our perception of freshness by developing a textile quality that swells when the air passes, as a praise to the wind.

Key objectives for sustainability

As a young designer aware of the ecological transition, I want to develop a project that meets a real need, that of overcoming hot weather with simple devices that have no harmful impact on the environment. I wonder about the way to change our habits, to create a new dynamic in front of the scorching temperatures. The textile becomes a carpet, a separator or a cooling wall.

I position myself in a reasoned production putting at the heart of my project a reflection around the raw materials in order to use their properties according to the specific uses of each of my objects.

For my first part, I develop surfaces of reception, tactile by a direct relationship with the material.I choose a carpet made of linen fiber, an ecological and thermoregulating material which by its holding, its dry contact as well as by its properties of soothing and tension reduction, allows the rest and the relaxation of the body.

I develop a quality revisiting the traditional Japanese tatami by proposing a floor mattress made from a material specific to my region, the sagne. This material perfectly answers the concerns of sustainable development as well as the protection of natural environments. This material interests me for its thermal insulating property.

For my second axis, I develop suspended textile surfaces which maintain an intimate relationship with water, the textile gives to see the cooling by the slow progression of water in the fiber, thus becoming a discreet visual witness of the air conditioning of the habitat. I use linen and a bamboo viscose to obtain a rot-proof and light fabric.
My last axis requires a fine and light fiber, I choose silk and ramie, a solid material that protects from the sun's rays by its isothermal property.

My project conceives durable objects in the time, the meticulous choice of the materials make them resistant objects and with the listening of an imminent need.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

Working as a range, my project ''Tempo Piano'' gives off a soft and soothing atmosphere. The colors are built around natural materials where shades of beige, ochre and ecru punctuated with bright colors that bring a certain vivacity. The color is significant, it accompanies the understanding of my objects. Thin blue bands are revealed during the swelling of the textile. A light pattern comes to underline the idea of a soft sensation of dispersion on the absorbent textile or a play of gradation by the stripe for my floor mattress accompanied by a contrasted ikat strip which comes to rock the glance by its random pattern.

I sought a refined aesthetic, which adapts to everyday life while transporting us into a fresh and soft atmosphere inspired by Asia and the Mediterranean.

Through these textile objects, I restore a personal vision of the contribution of freshness in the interior space. Ritualized, these objects engage the body at different scales. It feels, touches, explores through my ground qualities. An intimate encounter between the skin and the linen fiber worked in different forms. The body becomes an actor of the cooling process, it accompanies it, allowing it for example to control the heat by the humidification of the woven surface. Finally, the body is placed as a spectator, waiting to observe the meeting of the wind and the textile. These objects lead the body to take part in a new temporality.

A time that allows one to become aware of the weight of one's body, of the absorption of water in the fiber, of the movement of a surface in the wind, a soft gesture leading to a state of meditation.

Key objectives for inclusion

My project wants to be accessible to all. However, the choice of raw materials has a cost, but their use is necessary for the viability of each of my objects. Currently, the project is located at the border between crafts and industry. I would like to be able to develop this project with partners and virtuous companies that would allow me to reduce the cost of production through speed of execution.

My project can be adapted to a large audience, anywhere in the world where the issue of heat is a problem. Easy to set up, the objects once installed can be stored in the case of a temperate climate or remain present all year round in hot and tropical regions.

The differents textiles will have a certain price tag at the time of purchase, but their durable designs and materials will ensure stability over time.

Innovative character

My project is innovative of the way I managed to transpose the question of cooling in rather simple textile qualities and which by the property of the materials and their shaping allow to bring a tangible answer on the reduction of the sensation of heat within a domestic space. I reinvent and transpose known or traditional principles around supple and mobile surfaces with easy implementation.

Moreover, I propose a new use of this traditional material which is the sagne whose regular cut takes part in the maintenance of the wetlands, zones considered essential in the protection of the biodiversity.
