Description of the project

Summary

Underprivileged kids aged 9 to 11 learnt through sustainable architectural lessons to analyse and be critical with their schoolyard. Nature was in the backyard, Nature was neglected and still it was extraordinarily beautiful. It was there and it had lots of potential so we started learning about the natural resources we already had and we converted our non used back garden into a botanical garden finished with an open-air Fuller Dome.

They learnt next to biologists about urban flora and fauna and linking art and science designed  playful signs in English, Spanish and Latin to name the rediscovered trees. They also designed an area to have fun and to climb and painted a theatre to sing dance and celebrate the multiculturality of this school.

Key objectives for sustainability

Video:

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

Wood, green and dark brown from the soil. That's the colour scheme

Key objectives for inclusion

The schoolyard now has space for the ones who want to play football and for the ones who prefer sitting, digging, or relaxing. Now we are using a forgotten place

Results in relation to category

We have collected the drawings before and after the lessons and we are currently analysing the improvements and their understanding of sustainable architecture.

How Citizens benefit

Some parents who never used to visit the school or contribute have been involved and helped to build the Fuller´s Dome. OPen air clasroom

Innovative character

1. Inviting parents to learn with their children about sustainable architecture during school hours.

2. Reusing the space and optimizing what they already had. The trees and the space to place the openair classroom  are now much more valuable and tangible for the students.
