Description of the project
Summary
Rumita is a project of transformation, resistance and enhancement. A year ago we found ourselves facing a new difficult period. This is where our adventure began: we faced a new way of thinking and re-evaluating things, we learned to transform waste into something precious, into the object of a research. We have launched a project of recovery of wools from the territory of Alta Langa in the Piedmont area. The Langhe is an area mainly dedicated to sheep farming, and is suffering from depopulation. Sheeps in this area are rustic, mainly suitable for the production of milk and cheese. They do not have a very fine fleece and after shearing, the shepherds have to throw away the wool. So the Wool becomes a special waste and shepherds have to pay for its disposal. Unlike 50-60 years ago, when the wool of these sheep was mainly used for products for daily use or for the production of mattresses, today there is no market for this product.
This is where our adventure began: we recovered wool, we produced a yarn, we dyed the yarn with natural colors collecting native plants, and we started to produce rugs and tapestry, designed by illustrators and graphic designers. We work manually with vertical looms. In the past there was a loom in every house. The loom represents the union between heaven and earth and thanks to the process of weaving, we can get in touch with it and create stories.
Key objectives for sustainability
Key objectives:
— Revaluation of a waste
— 360° Production cycle
— Revival of traditions
— Recovery of raw materials
— Resource recovery
Key objectives for aesthetics and quality
Once wool was used for everything. Today we throw away the wool from our territories to buy wool from Australia and New Zealand, where animals are often abused and intensively reared. The aesthetic value of this project is to give beauty to a waste. Research is the basis of the project. The story of ancient traditions are transformed into contemporary objects, which tell ancient and modern stories.
Key objectives for inclusion
The project could become an example for all Italian mountain areas. It can be formative for all the shepherds who throw away wool today. The project is inclusive because it opens the mind to possibilities. Shepherds could understand that there are possibilities. A national wool recovery sustainable supply chain could be created. Jobs could be created and areas suffering from depopulation could be repopulated. Wool, as well as in the creation of handicrafts, can be used in many production sectors such as agriculture and construction. Attention must be drawn to this resource.
