Portable air monitoring device tracking the air quality of a city

Category

Products and life style

Project Description

Eo is a citizen science porject meant for an urban lifestyle, where the quality of air is hardly monitored and dramatically change from zone to zone every day.  The device collects data pinpointing the degree of breathability every 100 m during an outdoor activity, like commuting to work or jogging. Data are eventually shared with other users to build a common air quality map of the concerned city. At the same time, Eo transmits quantitative data to experts to get elaborated.

Description of the project

Summary

Eo is a portable air monitoring device connected to a mobile app that keeps track of the quality of air surrounding it.Citizens would be able to assess the quality of air they breathe during their daily tasks and scientists will be able to have a larger array of data to elaborate and to get a better understanding of the average air quality in a city. As an effect, users will be also able to assess the quality of air of their indoor spaces. The mobile interface not only allows to display and share information with other users, but it also provides alerts, reminders, and challenges to accomplish to continuously engage the users and to keep Eo as a daily activity.

Key objectives for sustainability

Eo encourages the common sense of a wide community of citizens who converge their efforts with scientists’ work to improve the air quality experience within cities and communities. These efforts visually display the issue and nudge stakeholders to act on different levels. At the same time, Eo promotes a long-term growth in environmental monitoring that enhances the synergy between population and institutions. Through a platform informing about risk and benefits of the air we breathe and helping science to gather data, Eo is an educative tool that aware all its users about an invisible factor affecting their daily life.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

Eo has been developed as a fashion accessory designed to be at the same time discreet but with a strong personality. The interface consists in a single on/off button and three LEDs indicating the status of the device. The entire device can be hooked to a every piece of clothe through a anodized steel clip. The product is small enough to be manipulate and its faceted surface contributes to the overall tactile experience, reflecting light at the same time, creating a suggestive visual contrast depending on the time of the day

Key objectives for inclusion

Since it is a citizen science project, Eo has been developed to be as democratic as possible. In fact, the overall interface has been designed to be as intuitive as possible and capable to be used without previous knowledge of air quality monitoring. All its parts, from the electronics to the design components, has been thought to be affordable without renouncing at the overall structure and quality.

Innovative character

This product promotes an interactive experience around air quality monitoring. Eo can sense and record major factors in a lifestyle of a common citizen, improving not only their quality of life but also opening to the major issue of air quality in major cities. The mobile interface allows the users to interact with each other, creating a common sense of a community that comes together in order to reach a goal.
