Description of the project

Summary

SKRYTA develops design-lamps that are both environmentally and socially sustainable.

Material that has been thrown away, in the hands of someone who is far from the labor market and whose work ends up in a conscious design interior. A journey that creates many new unexpected values for the environment, the individual and society.

Lamps loaded with love and good stories.

Every lamp has its own ID number so you can follow the journey from waste to glory.

It is individually signed by the person who made it, creating pride of work and self-esteem.

SKRYTA [slow design] is a design studio located in the heart of Gothenburg. Together Maria Zeilon and Lill O.Sjöberg creates a mix of innovation and craftsmanship, driven by the shared passion for sustainable solutions.

We want to show that it’s possible to manufacture products with a high design level from waste materials and with alternative manufacturing methods both in large-scale production and as limited editions. That even small design companies can be change-makers.

Key objectives for sustainability

Our way of working is built on the principle The Tripple Bottom Line (People, Planet, Profit) and contribute mainly to the global goals 12,10 och 3.

12. Responsible consumption and production - Resource utilisation, development in collaboration with social player and a sustainable endproduct.

10. - Reduced inequalities - Leave no-one behind - Creating value and possibilities for individuals far from labourmarket.

3. Good health and well-being - Our way of production creates the possibilities to be part of a bigger context - a stress free and calm workspace and pride of work.

The raw material comes from local industries whom support our work. Based on long-lasting collaborations we chose material that otherwise would to incineration. It is also important that it is a material that will return, so we can make series of lamps and not only one unique.

The product itself is made to last for long, but also to be easily disassembled for recycling. Textile material for incineration after long use and the metal frame can be used again or recycled into metall.

They are then manufactured in collaboration with Göteborgs Stadsmission who offers work in a socially sustainable way. Craftsman-like production contributes to create peace and quiet in which to work, balance and room for reflection.

Every lamp has its own ID number and is signed individually by the person who made it.

Being a participant in creating a product that is available at design hotels and in similar interior environments gives added values.

We take great part in the production which enables a close relation to the persons participation in the work training. To see someone finding harmony and peace while working, and the pride and joy when they experience the fantastic design interiors that their lamp ends up in is the driving force for us. Inclusion is a key value. A pride of work, increased self-esteem and well-being; a strengthening feeling

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

Working with ”waste”/ leftovers or residual material requires a backwards designprocess. Challenging but also inspiring to find new solutions.

We love the diversity that waste and leftover material offers. We turn what is a drawback in rational production to our advantage. Good use is made of even little pieces, odds and ends become a treasure trove of variation, and the material shapes its own story

We put a lot of effort to make the design as easy as possible to make, for someone who never done craftwork before, but also have the aesthetics suitable for selected design interiors.

For us the aesthetics is the core value, sustainability and inclusiveness is obvious.

Our lamps are chosen for the stories that the lamp carries in every project that we’re participating - symbolising and highlighting sustainability in many ways.

Key objectives for inclusion

This is described under ' key objectives of your project in terms of sustainability and how these have been met* above.

Contributing global goals

10. - Reduced inequalities - Leave no-one behind - Creating value and possibilities for individuals far from labourmarket.

3. Good health and well-being - Our way of production creates the possibilities to be part of a bigger context - a stress free and calm workspace and pride of work.

Results in relation to category

  • Social sustainability in hospitality projects.
  • Storytelling highlighting sustainability issues.
  • Pride, self esteem and inclusiveness for the person who made the lamp.

In product and interior design there is a huge demand for new sustainable materials, products and production methods. This is also the case in lighting, seeking sustainable alternatives and constant development. New productions / projects have sustainability as a requirement and the industry does not really have time to fill demand at all levels.

Something that is rarely mentioned is the social aspect. In Sweden, we have fair working conditions and CSR, but SKRYTA want to take this a step further. Through collaborations with selected actors, SKRYTA can develop and design products that reduce the impact on the environment and also create positive change through their production. Engaging people far away from labour market and offering a way back through textile work.

Our lamps, with ”build in stories” form a statement in the interiors. A storyteller and symbol for sustainability and highlighting these important issues. They are represented at many hospitality projects all over Europa.

The raw material comes from local industries whom support our work. Based on long-lasting collaborations. Leftover material that otherwise would to incineration. Creating new values for people and planet.

How Citizens benefit

  • Creating jobs built on circularity
  • Personal growth - be part of a design journey
  • Storytelling - highlighting sustainability in public places

Through another project that we were involved as early as 2013, we learned that we as designers could make a big difference for somebody else by changing our way of thinking. To adjust the design and production so that we involve other persons (far away from labour market) and letting them be a part of the design journey. First we collaborated with a Swedish prison - a challenging and most educating period.

Today we have a long-lasting collaboration with Göteborgs Stadsmission.

As an idea-based organization, Göteborg Stadsmission often meets people who, based on their experiences and abilities, are in need of various activities to approach the labor market.

The mission of Göteborgs Stadsmission is to support people into a life of inclusion. One of the their tools for offering people a way back to or back to the Swedish labor market is the textile workshop. In the textile workshop, they offer people the opportunity to work by developing textile knowledge and manufacturing products that are sold in their secondhand stores.

Through our collaboration they got an eye on how the work training could be developed and improved. To raise the level of design and also the engagement among the participants.

In the work training process they produce our lamps for different public environments.

We also engage small local actors for collaborations and developments in the lamp making, such as Remfabriken, the local rope museum or Johan/Dyeforindigo, a devoted indigo expert.

Innovative character

"Business for good" or "Design that makes a difference" is how we like to present what we do.

The combination of our production method, the sustainable material choices and the high degree of design makes our business rather unique and new thinking.

For this we got an award together with our collaboration partner Göteborgs Stadsmission ”Most useful business 2019” from the Swedish Agency of Economic and Regional Growth, Coompanion and HSB.

We believe that we as designers have big responsibilities today and the way towards a more circular future is the only way forward. We try to be bold, courageous and go the xtra mile to find solutions that is more sustainable in every possible way.

For us the aesthetics is the core value, sustainability and inclusiveness is obvious.
