Description of the project
Summary
[RE] is an itinerant museum for collaborative creation in rural areas.
An inflatable ephemeral pavilion, easy to assemble and disassemble, which will travel around different municipalities at risk of abandonment and social exclusion.
During this route, different workshops and activities will be held with the participation of local inhabitants, public institutions and artists. The tradition and local knowledge of each place, together with the discipline of each collaborating artist, will determine the activity to be carried out, always under the protection of this ephemeral architecture.
Throughout this trip, the pavilion will feed on the works and activities carried out by each town, accumulating successive layers of information.
As a final point, this pavilion will be installed in Madrid, showing inside all the works generated during this trip. This final exhibition, accompanied by a documentary video, will serve to record the experience and, above all, make visible an obvious problem of forgotten culture along with the risk of abandonment of these people.
Key objectives for sustainability
Currently in Spain there are more than 3,000 abandoned villages and three out of every five municipalities are at risk of abandonment. It is clear that rural depopulation is one of the great problems of our time and one of the greatest challenges facing our generation.
Society and, therefore, culture, have forgotten about our villages and their people. [RE] is an initiative that, through architecture, aims to bring culture and art closer to rural areas, making the problem of depopulation visible.
In the construction of the inflatable pavilion, the residents of the municipality of Arauzo de Miel will be involved. This itinerant pavilion will travel around different villages without leaving any residue on this route.
Key objectives for aesthetics and quality
[RE] is an open and adaptable proposal, which aims to involve the greatest number of possible collaborators and expand to other communities.
Associations, local companies and town councils of each municipality will be involved to collaborate with the project. The planning and the place of the intervention, where the pavilion will be installed, will be carried out in collaboration with the municipalities.
The activities will be coordinated by the collaborating artists, who under an open theme will propose flexible statements that allow participants to define the format and objectives of each activity. It is intended that the participants are not mere spectators, but, through an active and collaborative position, are part of all creative processes.
Key objectives for inclusion
The existing cultural activity in the area of Burgos and Soria, where this project was born, is practically non-existent. Depopulation, abandonment and, therefore, oblivion, are very widespread in this region. There are many places of architectural and artistic interest that, due to the lack of means due to the population decline, are abandoned throughout the territory.
[RE] wants to be a pioneering initiative at the national level, bringing, through ephemeral architecture, participatory workshops to one of the most unpopulated areas in all of Spain. The collaborative workshops, held in each of the municipalities of the route, will allow the different artists to be in touch directly with the population and the environment. This format bring the artistic experience to the inhabitants of each town, being part of the creative process..
Currently, the City Council of Arauzo de Miel (Burgos) has been contacted, the place where this initiative will begin. [RE] has the full support of this institution. In addition, this city council has offered its help to contact and involve the rest of the municipalities in the area.
At the same time, the creation of a multidisciplinary team made up of a series of young artists from different areas of the national sphere has begun. Each one of the members separately or forming collaborations with the rest of the team members, will be in charge of activating, organizing and directing the activities in the different municipalities.
Innovative character
In 1931, Federico García Lorca and Eduardo Ugarte created “La barraca”, a traveling university theater group whose objective was to bring Spanish classical theater to rural areas with low cultural activity.
It is surprising that, almost a century later, the problem continues and, even though there are different artistic projects in rural areas, these initiatives do not acquire the impact and scale necessary to reverse this situation.
[RE] is an alternative solution, an initiative that, through an itinerant project, intends to be extended to the entire national scope by expanding the network of participating municipalities and increasing the number of collaborators.
This project pretends, through its own architecture, to function as a landmark generating a recognizable image of the project regardless of the activities carried out inside.
