Description of the project

Summary

The concept is developed around the main characteristics of the New European Bauhaus and Green Deal in which the main focus is to organize events where young people can interact with each other in different social activities to develop innovative ideas for the future of the city. These events include interactive workshops, seminars, urban walks, competitions, art curations, and social gatherings. To support the goals of these events, a socially and culturally potential location is chosen which is the Flaminio District in Rome. The focused part in this region, also known as the barracks, is located on an existing cultural and social axis in which various activities can be held such as fashion, arts, and sports. So, with the events held that aim to educate and encourage the young generation to act on the sustainable future city idea, the characteristics of this region, the barracks and the surroundings are planned to be enhanced. All in all, the proposed concept aims the inclusion of youth in the construction of future sustainable cities with complementary events organized which are focusing on the production of different ideas for the sustainable future of the Flaminio District.

Key objectives for sustainability

This concept redefines the cultural, artistic, and social potentials of the city; creating a new, interactive community by reutilizing the Barracks, the chosen space, and redefining its purpose. The key types of sustainability in this idea revolve around arts and culture, and the revitalization of their meaning in the city context. By proposing new ideas and social opportunities within this introduced space, the Barracks, a sense of community and inclusion is created. With these events, by giving the community a social and interactive opportunity, the artistic and cultural sustainability within the city scale is encouraged and obtained, The events will include seminars, in which people will be given theoretical information of the cultural and artistic potentials and heritages of the city. Then they will be directed to an interactive workshop, in which they will be given the opportunity to process their information through sketches, diagrams, and mappings. Later on, the urban walks will help define and promote this theoretical and physical information further, by giving people the opportunity to see, feel and experience everything in person. Lastly, as a result of these experiences, exhibitions will be held to promote the interactive side of these events, as well as giving people a sense of community and appreciation. All of these, along with future planning, will contribute to the sustainable side of our idea by redefining the cultural gaps in the city and having them known and appreciated by the community, together.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

The concept offers the redefinition of three horizontal barracks which will be interrelated with each other programmatically and functionally. The units will establish open communication with the circulation zone allowing people to experience the events simultaneously. With the help of the communication between these barracks, various events will be held, and a dynamic circulation of events will be created. The interactive process enables urban walks, workshops, and exhibitions that are not separated from each other but rather related. The concept has the potential to hold diverse activities from different areas. Thus, the concept offers to collect various activities together to create a more active place while maintaining the aesthetic sustainability of the city. Since the existing area contains particular events in itself such as sports, arts, and fashion; the concept proposes to build a zone that acquires to be more active so that the quality of the area will not only remain but also develop.

Key objectives for inclusion

The idea embraced brings the young generation together in a creative and productive environment. Meanwhile, it creates a space where information exchange can happen between generations and communities. While architects and students get acquainted with the series of seminars, the workshops that will be held and articulated to seminars support the inclusion between generations and strengthen the shared knowledge. Apart from its physical inclusion, the idea of urban walks will provide the bond between the city and the young generation which will support the social and psychological side of the inclusion. Also, the district where the idea will take place provides the potential to be an event space and supports the additional activities that will be adapted through changes in time. In a broader sense, the idea will adopt the concepts of togetherness, arts, and interactivity in an environment that the young generations have a say in.

Innovative character

One of the innovative aspects of the project is that it adopts a structure that will include places with high cultural value in the sustainable transformation ecosystem of the future. With this series of events, young people who will build the cities of the future and are related to the city aim to create a structure that will affect the future of the city with the productions they generate. It is aimed to create a different perspective to #NewEuropeanBauhaus by creating a discourse to create the structure of the future by following the traces of the past. The project aims to raise awareness of the new younger generation and to develop solutions under the title of #EUGreenDeal, as well as to produce and announce a new discourse for other cities starting from Rome, Italy. Together with the participants,  a perspective is created that emphasizes the need for future planning in which young people are the most influential actors in the construction of the cities of the future. The project also includes the preliminary initiative and planning of the creative hub that will be active throughout the year. These platforms will transform the creative network provided by the event into a production mechanism that will be active throughout the year. These prominent points constitute the innovative aspects of the project.
