Modular acoustic design panel from reconstructed wool

Category

Products and life style

Project Description

Bringing wool waste back to life and making living better by taking care of the acoustic and the environment. Inspired by Circular design thinking RawFiction developed a new technology processing local, natural, renewable, end-of-life material to provide a solution for an increase of indoor noise pollution with all the benefits of the natural material wool. We are driven by the idea to provide a product that is beautiful, useful and sustainable to make better places for everyone.

Description of the project

Summary

Examining the aspirations of the well-being international standard, it can be observed that in the field of interior design, the coordination of natural raw materials and the corresponding acoustics also becomes of paramount importance. The new approach to raw materials in the field of design focuses on conscious use of materials and recognition of local opportunities.

The RAWfiction design company is inspired by circular design thinking and a new raw material approach to development. Despite the excellent quality of the residues generated in the textile industry, they are a burden on factories as unused raw materials. The problem is caused solely by the loss of the original function, its favorable properties are still preserved.

RAWfiction focuses on wool as a raw material from textile residues, reviving it with its own technology to create unique-looking acoustic panels. The favorable properties of the raw material - its color fastness, abrasion resistance - can be exploited not only in its unique appearance, but also in combining the appropriate function with its other advantages - sound and heat insulation, fire resistance. Thanks to the unique technology, its sound-absorbing properties have further increased with its processing, so it is in a competitive position as an acoustic panel. In addition to the representative appearance of the sound-absorbing surfaces, the acoustic properties of the interiors are optimized.

Key objectives for sustainability

Sustainability is key to understanding the start of RawFiction Design. Reduction is one of the foundations of our sustainable object culture. We believe we can contribute to this by producing high quality raw materials and high quality products with beautiful design.

Material Driven Design

With a material driven thinking industrial waste was the start of a journey to the final product. By exploring the possibilities of the material industrial wool waste it was the goal to tap the full potential of this fibre for the environment by reducing waste and making spaces more liveable. This new direction in design takes the material into the centre of attention and the design is led by what it’s given to see what kind of product will be possible with that material.

Keep it local

By keeping the whole process very local, from the waste to all parties involved in the product, using old machines and developing new processes for these machines, a high local impact is created. From a material driven design view it was important to find industry waste close to us which is natural and healthy but an end of life material. This was wool waste which is produced in Hungary, processed here and finally made into new acoustic panels in the heart of Budapest.

Zero Waste

We give people the possibility to choose for a local, renewable, raw material instead of the environmentally harmful option on the current market. By this the circle can be closed from an end of life material to a high end product, which itself can be reused for new acoustic panels and makes it a zero waste product. By closing the loop for this industrial waste a long term solution is found.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

Between beauty and function lies design. And RawFiction Design is one of the examples where this match is clearly visible.

Craftsmanship

By taking something no one is able to use any more and applying curiosity and craftsmanship to lead to a product not only making places acoustically pleasing but also bringing in colour, structure and a part of natural material closer to the humans indoors. It’s a highly customizable design and can fit the circumstances and needs of the humans and the room they are in.

Beauty of the raw

The material is not only visible and brings its own unpredictable beauty but also nice to touch and connect with the source where the material came from. Seeing the wool and experiencing the material in all its possibilities can give rooms structure and form.

Reconnect

The sheep is one of our oldest companion animals and wool is a fibre which shaped our history. The number of sheep breeds all over Europe is almost endless and is important to our environment. Having a part of this comfort of history in our spaces is a way to be aware of where we come and where we are heading.

Bauhaus great-grandchild

The evolving knowledge about materials, consumer and industry experiences are now better supporting a more sustainable process of aligning our material culture with the scale and possibilities of our natural resources, to which not only the production but the designer attitude must be adapted, as Moholy-Nagy had also advocated. His still modern view, according to which the designer seeks solutions to life’s problems not in isolation but bearing the community’s interests in mind, was revived by Victor Papanek in the 1970s and today by Alice Rawsthorn’s „attitudinal design” expression. The design which can react to the challenges of the world and be the „agent of change” plays an important role in shaping the balance of material culture and the use of raw

Key objectives for inclusion

Barrier-free environments making people able to access public space and feeling welcome and safe. This is not only to be reduced to the visible space but also to be extended to all other senses.

The audibly stress-free

In this way, good acoustics ensure that everyone can understand each other well, participate and play an active role. Stress caused by a burdensome background noise should not be underestimated. By regulating acoustics, especially in the range of the human voice, everyone stays in the conversation. People who are hard of hearing or who react particularly sensitively to acoustic stimuli due to a particular openness to stimuli caused by psychological or physical conditions are thus enabled to participate because places become accessible to them. To give all people to know places they feel safe also in an acoustic way.

Living in healthy spaces

The use of natural, sustainable and environmentally friendly materials also protects people's health. The air-purifying and moisture-regulating properties of wool also keep the indoor climate pleasant in the long term and thus create a healthy atmosphere.

Results in relation to category

Acoustic quality

Raw wool is an excellent material for acoustic solutions. It is perfect for absorbing the reverberation of the human voice, creating the possibility of making conversations more understandable. Conferences, meetings, public spaces and gatherings take place in a pleasant atmosphere.

people-friendly climate

In addition to its acoustic qualities, the fibre wool has the unique property of being climate-regulating. Wool can absorb up to 40% of moisture without feeling wet or damp and releases it again. This creates a pleasant indoor climate in the rooms in which Raw Fiction Design is used, which adapts to the circumstances, seasons and people.

social awareness

Having a sustainable choice for your needs gives control back to the client and their needs. Being conscious about the places we live, the environment and our own health is something  more and more important to be able to keep that planet livable.

Raw and quiet

The material used, the design and the manufacturing process create a unique product that brings structure to the space and makes it feel alive without being oppressive or overwhelming. Through the design possibilities, all projects so far have found the right tone and perfect place.

How Citizens benefit

Tangible tradition in a new form

With this new application of a very traditional material, an ancient consciousness finds its way back into our time. A possibility of recollection and connection with local Hungarian and European history becomes possible. The real experience with the properties of the material leads us back to a point where we can start a new future with old knowledge.

Local solutions for local people

Local material creates local jobs by using local machines and infrastructure, preserves knowledge, gives opportunities for exchange and learning. In this tradition, we also look at the diversity of our own origins and see a responsibility in raising awareness of the biodiversity of one of man's oldest farm animals and what role this animal can still play in our modern lives.

Innovative character

Circular solution

By taking the material as residual waste from the industry, taking it further and having it processed there, then producing new panels in the studio. It is important to look at the root of the problem and solve it. Only through a deep understanding of the industry's problems and by using the existing structures can we find a truly sustainable solution that does not create new problems.

A sustainable solution

The innovation lies in local sustainability and the efficient use of a natural material that others consider waste. Out of the many acoustic solutions that exist, there are only a few that have such a high sustainability factor.

Own ideas - old machines - own technology

In order to produce the panels, it was necessary to develop our own solutions for the wool waste in order to process it in such a way that it could be used and turned into acoustic panels. In these many steps, paths were taken for the first time, thus providing the opportunity to develop new solutions from the intermediate product and to implement further ideas.
