Description of the project
Summary
The NAWAREUM is the new interactive museum in Straubing, located in Niederbayern.
Here visitors can get to know renewable raw materials, renewable energies and solutions for the world of tomorrow without neglecting games, fun and the joy of discovery. Complex topics from the areas of energy supply, agriculture and resource consumption are presented in an understandable and transparent manner, so that young and old can satisfy their thirst for knowledge and take numerous ideas home with them. The dialogue with the team behind the NAWAREUM and networking with other visitors and scientists should also not be neglected.
“Shaping the future sustainably” is the NAWAREUM’s slogan from spring 2022 in Schulgasse in Straubing, when the NAWAREUM will open its doors to the general public for the first time and invite its visitors to participate in order to try out instruments and solutions for tomorrow's world already today.
Key objectives for sustainability
The NAWAREUM in Straubing will be a central information and experience location for
renewable raw materials and renewable energies. In addition to the topics of climate change and sustainability, the NAWAREUM also shows the opportunities and challenges of the energy and raw material transition. A special feature of the new building, which was largely made of wood, is its sustainable building technology. The House was planned according to passive house standards and is itself part of the approx. 1240m² permanent exhibition.
In terms of both content and design, the NAWAREUM holds an innovative and interdisciplinary approach. Together with architects, scenographers, scientists and artists, the topic becomes exciting edited and conveyed to an interested audience.
The energetic standard of the NAWAREUM corresponds to the increased requirements
of passive house construction. Exemplary in terms of climate protection is the energy supply for the new building. The necessary heating energy and process cooling is generated via geothermal energy around 40 geothermal probes in connection with a heat pump system. Supplemented by highly efficient heat recovery systems and sorption-based air conditioning, which means solar cooling, in use of solar and photovoltaic systems, the energy demand of the building can largely be covered by renewable energy sources. A connection is also available for energy peaks required in individual cases to the existing biomass heating plant of the technology and support center Straubing.
Key objectives for aesthetics and quality
The NAWAREUM is the German, nationwide showcase project for renewable raw materials. The NAWAREUM is an information and advice center in which
visitors can get information comprehensively and vividly about the future topics renewable raw materials and energies. The new building is in its complete construction and technology itself an exhibit and as well part of the exhibition and largely constructed of wood: load-bearing outer walls, a roof structure made of ribbed wood panels, columns made of glued wood, inner walls and stairs made of cross-laminated timber and one of stacked boards constructed wood concrete ceiling, which underneath is constructed as a wood acoustic ceiling, are the dominant materials. A special essential design element of the NAWAREUM’s south facade is one composition of free-standing trees that create associations with a silvan glade of the Bavarian Forest in Straubing’s direct environment and strengths the special character and purpose of the exhibition building, visible for everyone to the outside world.
Key objectives for inclusion
The NAWAREUM sees itself as a central information and experience location for the energy and raw materials transition in Bavaria, a non-formal learning location, a place that shows the connections between the bioeconomy and the energy transition, a place of experimentation, learning, information, networking, exchange and inspiration and a driving force for sustainable change.
The NAWAREUM brings people together. The exhibition stations can be operated and used together in groups, there are panel discussions in which everyone can contribute and even our bistro is designed that way so that you can sit at a large table. New connections, new bridges between people, with the team behind NAWAREUM, with other visitors and scientists can be made.
Results in relation to category
Although the NAWAREUM will only be open from spring 2022 on, focus on Straubing in relation to NAWAREUM’s topics renewable raw materials and renewable technologies is already there. So for example NAWAREUM was part of the „Green Deal lunchtime briefings“ of the Bavarian representation in the European Union in April 2021.
Also Straubing is already considered as „region of renewable raw materials“ and the whole city is already talking about the NAWAREUM and its exceptional building.
How Citizens benefit

As well our modern building already is inspiriation to Straubing’s people passing by the house. We planned the NAWAREUM with sustainability in mind and we hope that the visitors will be inspired to use sustainable materials also for their own construction project.
