Key objectives for sustainability

Sustainability is a core concept of the project narrative “Widespread greenhouses become the new city landmarks shaping by local bio/cultural diversity. They work out to regenerate and protect both plants and humankind “seeds”, growing up and inspiring “civic sprouts” to create an Earth better future. There different people and disciplines intertwine and produce a “surplus” of creativity, innovation, energy, food for better off all the community, even the weakest parts. What makes humanity re-emerge from the labyrinth is the discovery of the other, the sharing of fear and hope in a magical place that establishes the alliance between man and nature. In a technological way they are interconnected by floating roots. I would image the thousand of “greenhouses of miracles” as a one world net composed by widespread and connected democracies. They overcome past, present, human, nonhuman, classical, contemporary, scientific (..) categories that kept them in different shrines. It is an unpredictable and unexpected meeting. It is an otherwise impossible sharing: Creativity, Nature and Utopia” by La serra dei miracoli (The greenhouse of miracles) M.A.Mariani –‘O quarantotto co-founder.

Sustainability has been also met approaching both the performances as common experiences. During the lockdown period the community needed socialization, young people suffered from isolation, their rights needed to be claimed and a hope for a better future given. All the participants provided available human and material resources. A strong network multiplied the effect and the impact. The project acts as a “pollinator” involving students, experts, institutions, citizens in a creative process looking around searching, connecting, tasting, trying, failing. At the same time the network and the research activities lead to the documentary project development and to the students self-portrait collection with the purpose to widen the future narrative communication and the impact process.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

Metaphorical connections perceived through art and anthropology drive the project. They allow to share critical issues co-creating a new narrative. The project taps into art, myth, philosophy. Aesthetics is a way to move emotions, thoughts and actions. The greenhouse of miracles and the dandelion images evoke brightness, dreams, regeneration, hope. The self-portraits collection is a powerful youth expression. The documentary narrative (its title reminds de Malherb poem) taps into Greek myth: Upon the sudden arrival of isolation five young people find themselves invisible. Adventure, discovery, knowledge, friendship, passion, freedom are unattainable and untouchable. Castaways, sacrificial bodies, resigned, confused or determined in the search for a ransom, will they be able to find the thread to get out of the labyrinth? Maybe by chasing a dream or a wish, or by weaving alliances with trees and stones

Beauty is a core concept “Actually we do not care enough of next generations, of nature, of a widespread idea of beauty and harmony in the society. That’s create a struggle among generations, resources, social groups, communities. Rethinking a “social beauty” is the new frontier. It’s the new Utopia. It’s an approach through creativity, innovation, sustainability, inclusion, communities. We should flip the pattern shifting by the exiting rational paradigm to a creative one. It works out opening, mussing, unbalancing, mixing. It taps into the dreamlike dimension. It derives from the magical thinking that ¬accepting the opposites coexistence¬ musses, messes, reshapes, creates. When reality is becoming fiction, art can only produce reality. I would like to move our imagery from the glass case. A new imagery is able to arise behind the glass. Metaphorically the glass case turns into a glasshouse. It evokes nature and reminds us flowing, regenerating, inspiring, creating, involving without losing its previous protection and repair echo” by La serra dei miracoli, MA.Mariani

Key objectives for inclusion

The project promotes a crossover approach between generations, social groups, genders, disciplines, backgrounds. The project was implemented in Esquilino, a multicultural quarter of the city. It is a cultural and urban hub where different social groups, migrant communities, artists live. Furthermore located in the city centre it has always been a tricky area. Near to the main railway station it is a border zone. Inclusion is a core concept of the narrative developing an awareness process.

“The dystophic condition of pandemic times suddenly focuses on the capitalistic model crisis. There is distance between human and non-human, residents and migrants, among generations. Pandemic brings out the extreme consequences of the distance paradigm disrupting the cards on the table. In a kind of a paroxysmal game between opposites, the obliged social distance has shown a still frame in which humankind was fragmented in thousands of almost airless glass cases invoking survival even if forgotten connections with nature. A deep need of an utopian thought emerges (...) Developing the metaphorical dimension, nature provide us a new concept for driving humanity. Furthermore their stillness plants have strategies to protect and spread their seeds, to communicate and to develop a mutual aid for a better coexistence and development. They make alliances with insects and birds too. Collaboration, seeds protection, bond between roots could inspire us. New places and social interactions could be inspired by them, using and integrating people, ideas and disciplines (anthropology, art, botany, philosophy, architecture, robotics, design..). They are  places for intersection and coexistence: contemporary Agora’. Living creatures-spaces open themselves to artists, scientists, young people, philosophers, designers.. They would be places for thinking, learning, involving, creating, connecting, spreading” by La serra dei miracoli, M.A.Mariani co-founder of 'O quarantotto

Results in relation to category

The project aroused public opinion through arts and culture to the lack of schools and public space for adolescents underling the isolation damage. It emphasised the role of arts, culture and environment for the next generation future. It implemented a process to re-image urban space connecting beauty, inclusiveness, sustainability.

The project involved cultural, social, political, scientific experts and institutions: psychologists, educators, physicians, biologists, paediatricians, artists, journalists, Municipality Representative for Culture, Guarantor of Municipality Detainees, high schools, University, an art museum, a scientific museum, a strong student association, Government Representatives of adolescence and environment institutions. Citizens involvement was relevant. Political institutions availability was wide and fruitful even if the second event took place during the Italian Government crisis.

The project allowed YOUNG PEOPLE to bring themselves out of invisibility, process their experiences and allow a community understanding. They joined it as

- performers/audience

- self-portraits authors, the project uses an anthropological approach and the self-portraits contributed to explore youth imagery and emotions. Considering their artistic quality the collection “What I am” was created. It allows a community sharing of pandemic isolation trauma overcoming youth invisibility. Also it breaks media puppets adolescents stereotyped images. Teenagers artistic production processes their own emotions and experiences and allow understanding them to a wide audience.

Innovative character

It looks for new perspectives relating anthropological results and arts to arouse an emotion in the audience exploring relations, behaviours, challenges. It took a cue from field materials in order to create a most attractive, non-conventional “product”. Starting from a claim of youth rights it created a narrative that could engage and inspire a wider audience. The track it follows is the emotional one “using the field research emotions” too

It is innovative in

TIME in Italy last year it was likely the first public meeting on adolescence isolation damages joining students, experts, institutions, citizens to bring out the lack of school/places and mobilize communities. It highlighted the emergence of youth school drop-out and mental disease increasing. Both it promoted the need of new suitable public places for young people connecting arts, culture, education, environment.

CONTENTS it drives the process through words, metaphors, images, connections inspired by arts, philosophy, myth, anthropology, science. It could appear a little out of line in the daily life and tricky conditions, instead this approach moves emotions, thoughts, actions. The participants left them exploring and discovering a different way.

FORCES it joins forces from all parts of the community. It is intergenerational and interdisciplinary reaching different social groups, communities and places outside the city too.

SPACE it was multiplied through a community performance cafe’ performance breaking isolation and loneliness to mobilize citizens, media, institutions. We choose a daily life socialization neighbourhoods place - the cafe’ - where the events physically took place. There we hosted some of the participants dislocated on three floors, realizing more than a physical sharing. Outside the cafe’ and the nearest streets students and citizens participated together in small groups through a big screen or on their mobile. The online event allowed a wide participation and a subsequent listening
