Computational design - CNC cut Plywood - Office staircase

Category

Buildings renovated in a spirit of circularity

Project Description

Moire ascent is a staircase project inspired from the harmonic streams and aetheral movements for ethical office functionality. The staircase comprises of twenty-eight ornaments made of CNC cut plywood that sprout from each step and thin out gradually upwards. This construction aims at bridging the main working space with the board room in the new architecture office “Aegean Landmark” in Athens, Greece.

Description of the project

Summary

Moire ascent is a staircase project inspired from the harmonic streams and aetheral movements for ethical office functionality.

Key objectives for sustainability

The plywood as a raw material is sustainable and economic. Moreover, CNC cutting is a simple and safe method which indicates the versatility and remarkable aesthetics of digital fabrication.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

The staircase comprises of twenty-eight ornaments made of CNC cut plywood that sprout from each step and thin out gradually upwards. This construction aims at bridging the main working space with the board room in the new architecture office “Aegean Landmark” in Athens, Greece.

Key objectives for inclusion

Diverted from the widespread CNC Cutting of manufacturing identical and repetitive parts, this project aims to fabricate multiple unique elements that compose an integrated ensemble while sequenced.

Results in relation to category

Wood is a material with great physical properties that has been used in architecture throughout history, from medieval urban residences, to modern applications in all types of buildings. This use of wood opens up new and unexpected possibilities for high performance and elegant structures with a sustainable and renewable building material.

How Citizens benefit

This design showcases the possibilities for efficient, economical, ecological and expressive wood architecture that arises at the intersection of craft, digital innovation and scientific research.

Innovative character

The outcome is a novel architectural expression establishing new prospects in the digital design field.
