Reactivation of the riverbank with planning of a market hall

Category

Reinvented places to meet and share

Project Description

The basis of the design is the reactivation of a small town. This is to be achieved by redesigning the riverbank and the existing boatyard at the entrance to the city. With the help of pavilions, the riverbank will be divided into different outdoor spaces. The integrated market hall thus stands as a prelude to the city entrance situation and flows into the riverbank. The reactivation of the riverbank will create various meeting places for all generations.

Description of the project

Summary

The basis of the design is the reactivation of the city of Eberbach. This is to take place with the help of the riverbank redesign, as well as the redesign of the existing boatyard at the entrance to the city.
The pavilions on the river bank will be placed on the readable urban development axes, so that the development is made readable. Through this positioning, they divide the riverbank into three parts and, with the open spaces in between, sometimes stand as a symbol for the former uses.
The following three open spaces are created on the newly planned riverbank: a recreational area on the northernmost part of the riverbank, a tourism area between the boat rental pavilion and the café, and finally a cultural area between the café and the newly planned market hall.
The border of the river bank to the market hall additionally defines its end point. The integrated market hall thus stands as the prelude building of the city entrance situation and flows over into the river bank. The basis for the market hall is an existing boatyard. Therefore, in addition to the new use of a market hall, a boat exhibition will also find its use south of the existing building. The two boat exhibition modules are defined as a high point, end point as well as a kind of city gate, as they represent a counterpoint to the high point at the other end of the city. A greenhouse module is found again to the north of the existing building to allow fresh produce to be harvested directly on site. The existing distinctive shed roof form, as well as the principle of the additive floor plan, form the basis for the extensions. A reference to the river Neckar is made possible by an atrium with a view of it. The sustainability aspect also plays a role in the choice of materials. The charred wood façade is unoiled, weather-resistant and not susceptible to pests. The interior and existing elements feature exposed concrete and the polished reinforced concrete ceiling.

Key objectives for sustainability

One of the most important aspects in terms of sustainability is the idea of regional products and dealing with an existing building. Through the planned greenhouse, in addition to the existing building structure, it is possible to harvest the products on site and eat them directly or take them home. In addition, the choice of the wooden structure of the new buildings and the charred dark wood façade of the market hall has been deliberately designed with the sustainability aspect in mind. Since the charred wood façade is unoiled, weather resistant and not susceptible to pests. In addition, active work was done with the existing building. The goal was to preserve as much of the existing structure and add only what was necessary. Bringing nature into the building with the help of the greenhouse was an important basis of the concept. In the same way, however, regional plants and trees will be repositioned along the riverfront. Since it is currently used as a parking area, the riverbank zone is largely sealed. This is to be changed by the reactivation. Green space, trees and lawns will ensure the introduction of nature on the riverbank.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

During the reactivation of the riverbank, very strong reference was made to the existing structures of the city. Different open spaces were created, the sports area, the leisure area and the cultural area. The division of the areas is done by the pavilions, which refer to the market hall by the dark material. By ending the river bank in the newly planned market hall, the areas are linked together. The market hall is intended to serve as a place of community and, in addition to providing food, to serve the social good. By choosing dark charred wood for the facade, the market hall should also be distinctive and represent its public status. The window reveals and interior will be finished with light wood to contrast with the dark façade. Since the existing boatyard consisted largely of concrete in the interior, this material will also be used in the new design. Thus, existing walls or the existing ceiling are to be retained as exposed concrete. The adjacent greenhouse will be illuminated at night and also symbolizes the entrance character for the city.
On the riverbank, the dark wood of the market hall is reflected on the pavilions. The newly planned areas with the seating steps are planned with sandstone, as this is a regional stone. The formation of the seating steps guarantees a comfortable stay at the river bank. Plants and green strips support this.

Key objectives for inclusion

By placing the pavilions on the newly planned riverbank, the urban development of the city is made legible and at the same time divides the riverbank into the different areas. In addition, the uses of the outdoor areas relate to the existing structures. Thus, in the first section, the former harbor bulge is reused as a bathing bay. In the recreational section with the seating steps, the boat rental makes reference to the already existing recreational boats. In the last section, the cultural area, a sand promenade will also be formed. In this place there used to be a gravel reloading point, and the new use is to be based on this. Finally, the conversion of the existing boatyard into a market hall is intended to pick up on the basic structure of the existing building and make it more distinct through conversion measures. The existing building is an important building in terms of use for the city and should therefore also receive an honorable redesign.

Innovative character

The idea of the work is to reactivate the existing riverbank, as it represents much more potential and can be seen as a community place. In the same way, the entrance to the city should be redefined so that the small town becomes more attractive and does not have to struggle with the problem of rural exodus. The redesign of the existing building is also intended to draw attention to the need to work more with existing buildings. In addition, the use of the market hall was deliberately chosen because the demand for regional products is growing.
An important point is also the nature. It was tried in all areas to integrate nature into the design. Whether through plants, green spaces or regional products.
In today's world, the focus is often on big cities and how they can grow even faster. This is exactly why I focused on a small town in my work. These towns need just as much attention as the big cities. They offer a lot of untapped potential.
