Description of the project
Summary
Art must be accessible for everyone and not just for people living in larger cities.
Through this project, I will focus on creating the best environment for upcoming artists where they can explore their field of art and work purposefully and focused.
With respect for the Avernakø's residents, visitors, history, nature, topography etc. I will create an architectural proposal on how a possible artist in residence with an associated sculpture park on Avernakø can be experienced.
By establishing an artist in residence on Avernakø, the island’s local life will be enriched with young driving forces. In addition to being a temporary home for upcoming artists, this artist in residence will also serve as an attraction on the island for both locals and tourists in the shape of a large sculpture park, talks, lectures, exhibitions, performances etc.
This Artist in Residence for Ceramics and Painting, will at the same time also create jobs such as maintenance of buildings and the sculpture park, administrative work, gardening, cleaning, etc., which will be a positive addition to the island’s local community.
The idea is to create a place for people with common interests, and with the same passion for their craft. Here the artists will be able to share experiences and learn methods and techniques from each other.
The goal of this project is to create a good framework for the artists who live there, the locals and tourists with art and architecture as a tool.
Key objectives for sustainability
This project will have incorporated sustainability in several ways. Both in connection with the construction of the building, as all load-bearing elements will be build as a solid timber construction. At the same time, the works of art, after production and construction, will have an extremely long life, as it is produced in clay. It is a material we still find to this day as relics of antiquity.
In addition to the long life of the ceramic, it can also be used for the production of Rockwool - however, this is a relatively resource-intensive process. Therefore, it is important that high quality sculptures are produced, which will be to the delight and benefit of Avernakø for many generations to come.
Key objectives for aesthetics and quality
Aesthetics and quality will be two keywords in this project. This artist in residence is a place for upcoming artists from all over the world. In other words, only the best artists from home and abroad are selected, and thus have the opportunity to create the framework for a fantastic sculpture and nature experience in the South Funen archipelago. This sculpture park will be a trademark for the whole island, and people will come from near and far to experience the aesthetics and quality of the works of art that are created.
It is very important that nature is allowed to be nature. In other words, the sculpture park must not be curated in advance, but must, in interaction with the individual works of art, merge.
Key objectives for inclusion
Avernakø is one of several islands in the South Funen archipelago, which has experienced a continuous decline in population growth over the last 100 years. It is also an island with high ambitions to grow again, but without having a fixed plan. This has led to the closure of schools as well as increased unemployment.
The construction of an artist in residence, where art will be created, will at the same time also create jobs such as maintenance of buildings and the sculpture park, administrative work, gardening, cleaning, etc., which will be a positive addition to the island’s local community.
An artist in residence for upcoming artists on avernakø will be an attraction that will unite the island's residents, tourists and artists staying at the residence. In addition to being the daily workplace for ceramics and painters, it will also be a place that, among other things, will be responsible for establishing ceramics and painting courses.
Innovative character
Avernakø is an island in the South Funen archipelago that mainly has visitors during the summer holidays (June - September). The construction of an Artist in Residence with an associated sculpture park, will help to create an attraction on the island which can be visited all year round.
There is also a very narrow selection around the world of Artist in Residencies for young artists struggling to become part of the established art world. With this project, I want to help create a stepping stone, and give the opportunity for young people to unfold creatively, and exhibit to a large audience.
To create awareness around Avernakø something needs to be established which attracts people to visit the island. An Artist in Residence like this would hopefully create the awareness Avernakø deserves.
