Description of the project

Summary

Arquia/próxima  is the cultural programme of the Arquia Foundation, designed to offer support to Spanish and Portuguese architects in the first ten years of professional practice and based on the dissemination, promotion and enhancement of their accomplishments and principles as professionals.

It is an open site for those who want to get to know and locate the new emerging iberic architecture, and the aim is for it to become a reference base that connects with young architects and, in turn, allows the current context and concerns of young architecture to be known.

Structure

The programme is structured in biennial editions, which through successive curatorial teams, catalogue and select the registered accomplishments, for publication in a catalogue and to present them in the 'arquia/proxima festival', where the realities are discussed by the voices and according to the principles of its most restless actors: those starting out.

The core of the programme is an open registration on the website
www.arquia.es/proxima , which accommodated an unlimited number of  accomplishments from each author
The curatorship was initially formed by the curator and the scientific committee, consisting of a representative from the Board of Trustees of the Foundation and a variable number of architects representing the different regions of Spain and Portugal.

The programme has a network of ambassadors, area representatives and whose role it is to identify teams of young architects.

Finally, as a culmination of the arquia/proxima programme, the biennial festival was proposed, which in an open debate format analyses the architectural and sociological conclusions drawn from the accomplishments presented in each biennial. Within this framework, the arquia/proxima prize worth €15,000 is awarded for the best accomplishment of the biennial, whereby the 24 accomplishments selected by the jury are also explained by their authors.

Key objectives for sustainability

The slogan of each edition has always followed sustainability criteria:

VIII Architecture Festival arquia/próxima: Under the slogan RESILIENCE: A DYNAMIC BALANCE, the curator, Josep Ferrando Bramona, defines the health of a society as its ability to recover and overcome each conflict. In addition, it reflects on the preventive and transforming task of the actions of architects whose technical solutions will show the possibilities and limitations as a global society and whose humanistic role will avoid generating cities, with large latent imbalances.

The Festival has had different editions in different cities throughout the Spanish territory over more than 14 years, promoting good practices in architecture, rewarding exemplary works for their relationship with other disciplines, with the public space of the city and its citizens:

El VII Festival arquia/próxima 2020 Virtual: TURNING POINT.: We live in a constantly changing world. Whether political conflicts, inequalities social, ecological disasters or pandemics; the planet and humanity face a continuous state of transformation and necessary adaptation. In this edition we will collectively examine how emerging architecture in Spain and Portugal is meeting these challenges. An opportunity to reflect on those practices that are responding with risk and innovation

El VI Festival arquia/próxima 2018 Madrid: RELEVANT PRACTICES: invites us to reflect on the paradox produced by the international success of Spanish architecture that does not correspond to the volume of architectural production in recent years, but nevertheless reflects a work more relevant than ever

El V Festival arquia/próxima 2016 Málaga: IMPERFECT FUTURE aims to initiate a reflection that allows facing the profession with resistance and without melancholy

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

This point is explained through the qualities of the winning projects that the jury has highlighted and that represent the sustainable values of the Festival:

If these walls spoke: In the case of this reform for a beauty center, the small scale or the modesty of the commission does not prevent the search for a narrative capable of transforming a place that, fulfilling the functions required by the client, offers an experience for the user other than that commonly associated with these businesses.(Iñaki Carnicero, octubre 2018)

Persiana Barcelona: Sometimes a commission, no matter how small, does not reveal its full potential until the end. For this reason, perhaps, as important as the commission is the attitude towards it. In the case of the Barcelona Blind, the author assumes the need to make an improvement in a product that over the years has become part of the collective imagination, understanding that improving is perfecting something, understanding that improving is making something of a good state to a better one. And it is that attitude, in which the author's work passes to a background, where the project begins to grow. From an attentive work to detail, the Barcelona blind implements its features, not only on a small scale but also taking into account how the element will be able to characterize spaces on a larger scale, in how the blind will be in tune with the city.

The commission itself ends there, but it is in its practical application, as an installation to show the product, where everything makes sense. The way in which an element as simple in its essence as the blind, is able to characterize and configure a space gives an idea of why the attitude towards small things, and in this case that of its author towards the commission, sometimes, it is trascendental.(Alberto Veiga, octubre 2016)

Key objectives for inclusion

This point is explained through the qualities of the winning projects that the jury has highlighted and that represent the inclusion values of the Festival:

Ecobulevard del Ensanche de Vallecas highlights the benefit, utility and convenience of the project and the environment. The environmental and sustainability criteria are in all its determinations, as well as the promotion of social exchange. (Félix Arranz, octubre 2008)

Inteligencias colectivas: It is valued as a complete and complex example of new formats, operating both in the way of working: a group of collectives, and in the support: web. A teamwork proposal that develops a network research and dissemination project, an open and participatory database, based on the analysis and mapping of prototypes and construction details, is especially valued. The realization is pointed out as a generator of new processes, an authentic transformative format. (Ariadna Cantis, octubre 2012)

"Housing for teachers in the rural community of Llullucha, Cuzco". The proposal is an act of generosity and an example of the transforming power of architecture to bring a qualitative change to the social conditions of the communities in which it is inserted. Respect for the landscape stands out, as well as the application and ingenuity in the use of typologies, techniques, materials and local knowledge in the project. Finally, the humanistic character of architecture and the intellectual perspective applied to an apparently simple and at the same time complex architecture stand out. (Gonzalo Herrrero Delicado, octubre 2020)

How Citizens benefit

This point is explained through the qualities of the winning projects that the jury has highlighted and that represent the citizen participation values of the Festival:

Monubench Project

Analogical smart cities

Social alphabet/Alphabet cities

From olimpic games to urban games

Paradise lost

In a constant search for opportunities for the construction of design and emergent thinking, understood through five varied but coherent actions, it represents architecture understood as an active construction of the historical, social, economic, emotional and formal context both past and future. With a large dose of creativity, rigor and humor, both at a methodological and formal level, the entrepreneurial nature of this project is based on fundamental social and architectural values: the democratization of the city and the construction of social ties and spaces for a capable community. to blur economic, social or class differences.

The project takes as a reference what for others is the "third person" of architecture: the user. Through field work, in situ, in the street, with citizens and with public administrations and institutions, this is a project that aims to open up existing spaces by proposing and introducing new strategies and forms of collectivity. The scales of the awarded works are diverse, but all have the common challenge of the common classifications of the projects, including the one that distinguishes between project and work carried out, emphasizing the importance of active forms that are materialized in media such as paper or drawing. .

There are small constructions of an experimental nature, halfway between the 1/1 model, the installation and the prototype. We find educational and participatory experiments that strive not to have a merely graphic and representative result, but rather a generative and transformative one. Within the paper and purpose projects built using graphic objects, we find an urban strategy proposal where the social ideology is r

Innovative character

This point is explained through the qualities of the winning projects that the jury has highlighted and that represent the innovate caracter of the Festival:

BARTLEBOOTH. PLATAFORMA DE EXPERIMENTOS EDITORIALES

The originality of the format and its analytical capacity when examining new forms of production in contemporary space. The creation of an operational thought capable of generating project strategies as a result of an intelligent look at social, political and economic issues of the present moment is especially valued. The proposals presented present a space for experimentation that migrate from the theoretical to the material and experience!, Responding with critical thinking to key contemporary environmental, social and political conditions and issues. (Iñaki Carnicero, October 2018)

El blog paisaje transversal assumes the challenge of disseminating from the purest sense of the word. A challenge based fundamentally on the concern to make available to the public new ways of approaching work on the city, the environment and the landscape, even if this means doing it against the current. And it is this will of critical capacity, the transversality of its analyzes and the conceptual framework under which the entire proposal is developed, allow the blog to act as a necessary thinking tool. (Alberto Veiga, October 2016)
