Description of the project
Summary
The varieties of cultures and identities, we see in vibrant cities is purely stunning. Yet our surroundings are designed to make us "passers-by". Straight architecture, installations and structures lead us to dismiss people around us.
The object “Seitenblick” is installed to change this behavior. In a very subconscious way, the participants are directed to look at each other. Nudging people to see different identities, as normal, beautiful, and various as they are.
“Seitenblick” was developed after a deep dive into discrimination, social injustice, and prejudices. In our developed world we still struggle to explain, that every human life has the same rights. We are confronted with the fact, that almost nobody is free from prejudices and discriminating behavior. At the same time, we benefit from different cultures and globalism every day.
I asked myself, how can designers take over responsibility for such a sensible topic? In my research I found that it is not a lack of variety in cultures that we are experiencing. It is more about the cultures we actually see in daily life. We are trained to expect things from cities, and cities are designed to show a dominant culture. But the people from different backgrounds, are already here. My thesis: If people are invited to realize, that our cities are already multicultural micro universes, they would understand, that mixed cultures are no threat, on the contrary, this diversity has a huge benefit for everybody.
Another aspect I realized, is the fact, that many products that are trying to engage people in cities are often connected to a lot of commitment. Most people are not ready to just talk to strangers or even spend time with them. That´s why I decided to design an object that is very subtle. It almost unconsciously nudges people to have a look around. Share a view, maybe even have a chat.
Key objectives for sustainability
"Seitenblick" is an object for public space. Its installation should be done by institutions (for example the city itself). Due to this institutional organization, the object can be used and maintained for many years.
If "Seitenblick" is at the end of usability it can be recycled. "Seitenblick" is constructed out of steel pipes. As there are no material mixtures, the material can be given back into a material circle. The circularity of steel is proven and practiced worldwide.
Key objectives for aesthetics and quality
"Seitenblick" is an apparently simple object. Exactly this simple and well-known form, enhances a wide variety of interaction. The design only indicates the usage. People are invited to use it, as they need it. Lean, sit, stand, climb. Due to the low threshold for actually using it, "Seitenblick" is a space for gathering, without any restrictions.
Due to its reduced aesthetics, the object quietly fuses into many individual surroundings. This detail is important to install the object in as many different places as possible. The object is designed to become a new essential element for parks, stations, pavements, streets, and other public spaces.
The simpleness also allows an easy production and installation to be affordable even in bigger amounts.
Key objectives for inclusion
Creating sustainable cities, is about creating social communities. Creating an environment for openness, respect, and daily interaction without prejudices.
"Seitenblick" leads people to get aware of their surroundings. Of all kinds of people in the city. The object does not force any engagement, but it offers a lot of options.
It is creating a subtle space free from consumerism, expectations, and commitment.
Innovative character
Many concepts try to gather people in cities, to create safe spaces or to provoke interaction. Many of them are overdesigned. People are afraid of direct contact with strangers. The target group of inclusive projects is often very limited to the few openminded people, that are already interested in social exchange.
"Seitenblick" is made for subconscious exchange and awareness. Using it, is not connected to any commitments or regulations. It does not force intimate situations unto strangers. The main function of "Seitenblick" is to lead people together. To have a look at each other. To be free to leave any time. But also, to showcase, that living in a city brings together many different people. That we share a city. And that sharing a place, is not only functional but also exciting and beautiful.
