Project Description

The aim of the course is to think up and implement student mobility projects in the context of current mobility developments. In doing so, the participants from different faculties of the Bauhaus University Weimar (media, art&design, architecture, civil engineering) will work in groups to improve the design of the mobility offer around the campus and in the urban area of Weimar. A special role is to be played here by the interdisciplinary exchange between the students, in the spirit of Bauhaus.

Description of the project

Summary

bauhaus.mobil is a particularly interdisciplinary course designed and run by students for students. We, Lena Klopfstein and Maximilian Wunsch, had the idea for the course. We were still students ourselves and the Bauhaus semester was just around the corner. As part of the Bauhaus Semester 2018/2019, which took place to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, students were able to contribute ideas for their own courses. We had jointly created a mobility concept for the Bauhaus University Weimar during the previous semester. The Bauhaus semester was the ideal opportunity to launch sustainable mobility projects by students for students. After the first successful semester, the project was continued the following year, led by students Wiebke Mros and Philipp Oz Kohl.

The aim of the course is to think up and implement student mobility projects in the context of current mobility developments. In doing so, the participants from different faculties of the Bauhaus University Weimar (media, art & design, architecture, civil engineering) will work in small groups to improve the design of the mobility offer around the campus and in the urban area of Weimar. A special role is to be played here by the interdisciplinary exchange between the students, which is intended to promote creative project ideas, entirely in the spirit of the original teaching at the Bauhaus.

"Let's want, think, create the mobility of the future together!" - following this call in October 2018 and 2019, students from all four faculties tinkered with concrete ideas on the topic of climate protection in urban transport. Closely following the Bauhaus idea, the student course bauhaus.mobil links theory and practice, so that the ideas are not only conceived by the students, but also implemented in real life.

The range of realized projects is diverse: bicycle trailer rental, mobility homepage for the Bauhaus University Weimar, bicycle service station, bicycle cinema, no-parking day, ...

Key objectives for sustainability

The project aims to make clear that, on the one hand, everyone can contribute to sustainable urban transport and the success of climate change, but on the other hand, interdisciplinary exchange must be promoted. If science, engineering and design are combined, we can achieve the goals of sustainability more effectively together. Each individual can contribute to sustainability with an idea, but through interdisciplinary exchange these ideas can grow.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

All project ideas within bauhaus.mobil are mobility related and are designed both aesthetically and for a high quality of experience. Two very good examples of this are the "make walking fun again" project and the "bicycle cinema" project. In the case of "make walking fun again", the aim is to make walking more exciting again. The group developed a box that can be used to design sidewalks to rediscover interest in walking. The box includes chalk spray, stencils, tape and more that can be used in creative ways on campus grounds. In the "Bicycle Cinema" project, the projector and speakers for a film were powered by the electricity generated by bicyclists. This was to show how much electricity we need on the one hand and how effective cycling can be on the other.

Key objectives for inclusion

The bauhaus.mobil project is open to anyone with a mobility-related idea and the motivation to turn it into reality. No faculty and no degree program is exempt, the offer applies equally to all. The course is also bilingual, students can choose whether to take the course in English or German. The focus of bauhaus.mobil is to promote interdisciplinary teaching and to put great mobility projects into practice.

Innovative character

Even though the four faculties in Weimar come together in one university, there are hardly any courses that manage to bring together participants from all faculties. This is successfully achieved with bauhaus.mobil. Moreover, the course is led by students themselves. Another innovation is that the project ideas are implemented within one semester. This is to show that even smaller projects are worthwhile and can have an impact on mobility.
