Description of the project

Summary

As the main element of street furniture, the bench is a place to rest and interact with other people, used by everyone and anyone. "Fusta en ones" aims to honor those two functions and create a safe space for every citizen, from seniors to children, including people with disabilities, and the homeless.

The designers, Andreu Torner and Gemma Zanoguera, have worked to create a bench that invites people to walk on the streets and create a community, protecting them from the weather and allowing an intimate and quiet place. The main difference from this design to any other bench that can be seen in modern cities is its roof where creeping plants can grow, contributing to a greener and more joyful city.

Key objectives for sustainability

Given the actual climatic situation, we believe in the application of sustainable design in each and every one of our designs. Following these beliefs, we have made “Fusta en ones” an urban bench made 100% from recycled and recyclable materials: steel and a recycled polymer.

Not only is the bench made from recycled materials, but it also contributes to greener cities thanks to the ivy-friendly bench roof.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

When designing, we always try to balance aesthetics with functionality, sacrificing the less possible amount of it. In the case of “Fusta en ones”, we have managed to accomplish a modern but original design, that accomplishes each and every function we wanted it to include.

Good and beautiful design isn’t only related to the joy of using it, it is also responsible for creating a comfortable, beautiful and inclusive environment in the cities, to encourage people to walk and exercise, to get out and have a healthier lifestyle, and a better mood.

Key objectives for inclusion

Our main concern during the process of design of street furniture is allowing all kinds of people to enjoy it, regardless of their conditions. To enable this, "Fusta en ones" has an elevated section with access to an armrest, to help senior citizens and people with mobility difficulties to sit and get up. The bench's measurements have been taken from ergonomic studies to make it comfortable, and it has been made really long to permit the sitting of a large group or having a person lying on it.

Innovative character

One of the key original concepts of “Fusta en ones” is its roof. This roof is designed to be a perfect structure for ivy to be planted on, giving it the ability to provide shadow to the bench users on a sunny day and shelter to homeless people in case of need.

Another one of the key concepts of “Fusta en ones” is its double-height seat, providing elderly people with difficulties to sit on lowe benches with a solution and an armrest to stand up and down.
