Description of the project

Summary

Created by Andreu Torner and Gemma Zanoguera, "Tubo amb corbes" is a bicycle parking designed to be an encouragement to use new and sustainable means of transportation. It offers a safe and easy place to secure two bicycles, and an electric scooter, giving them a place where they can be fastened by two anchoring points and permitting the user to park any kind of bicycle, from kids' to foldable.

The design is outlined by a stainless steel tube curved forming the shape of a wave, giving it its name (from the catalan "tube with curves") and a playful figuration that gives it the capability to adapt to any kind of bicycle. Its covered body, which creates a secure space to store the electric scooter, serves as an impromptu shelf where the user can leave their belongings during the securing and unbinding of their vehicle.

The main objective of this design is to promote the use of responsible means of transportation giving them a place to be safe in an easy to use, ecological, and aesthetic way.

Key objectives for sustainability

In terms of sustainability, our main objectives are promoting the use of carbon-neutral transport devices, giving a safe, aesthetic, inclusive, and helpful place to secure them when not in use, made with completely recycled and recyclable materials.

Modern cities and towns are welcoming the arrival of electric scooters as a new and sustainable mean of transportation, while also encouraging the growing use of the bicycle as a healthy, ecological, and wholesome vehicle. We want to help cities accommodate these changes and offer users all facilities, making this transition to sustainable transportation easy, enjoyable, and safe. As studies suggest, the main concern for users about the use of those means of transportation is the possibility of theft when they are not in use, and the null adaptability of parkings to different kinds of bicycles (children, foldable, unusual sizes, or adapted vehicles) so this parking is specially designed to prevent and solve these problems.

We also have chosen both materials, stainless steel, and recyclable polymer, to be completely recyclable and preferably also recycled, as circular economy is one of the pillars in which we believe our future must be established. These materials also are easy to repair and substitute, keeping maintenance to a minimum.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

"Tubo amb corbes" has been carved away from a functional shape to a purified, organic, and refined version that gives a sense of dynamism and playfulness. At first sight, not being used for its real purpose, it might simply appear as a piece of decor more than functional.

The line that creates the volume of the design has taken the likeness of a wave, giving it a characteristic sense of liveliness and balance at the same time. The material used for this purpose, polished stainless steel, also gives it a bright and brisk appearance, farther than its functional reason. On top of this outline, we can find a covering made of polymer that mimics wood, giving it a natural tone and also a feeling of purpose and functionality, hinting at its real intention.

Key objectives for inclusion

Our design aims to popularize the use of bicycles and electric scooters by all citizens. Its inclusive trait is the easy usability it offers and adaptability to all kinds of bicycles and users, against most of the classical bike parkings we can find that only allow their use to standard models.

Innovative character

This idea is mainly innovative in the incorporation of a safe place to fasten an electric scooter, a fairly new and rising means of transportation in today's cities. Not only that, but it also offers more to the user than traditional parkings have done: room to maneuver on the fastening process without having problems with the other vehicles using the product, and a space to leave the users belongings during those maneuvers.
