Description of the project

Summary

ReGen Villages Holding, B.V. is a Dutch company founded from Stanford University research on the topic of technology enabled (AI/ML digital twin) bio-regenerative and resilient neighborhood developments and retrofits. ReGen Villages has a patented VillageOS(tm) software platform for using machine learning both for generative design of self-reliant neighborhoods, as well as operating these regenerative and resilient community infrastructure around clean water, renewable energy, high-yield organic food production and circular nutritional waste to resource flows.

Key objectives for sustainability

Over the last five years, ReGen Villages has been working on a unique model for housing the globe’s next two billion inhabitants. The company draws on a background in technology and environmental sustainability to envision and create neighborhood developments that enhance, instead of exploit, the land on which they develop. This model situates ReGen Villages at the nexus of clean water, renewable energy, organic food, and waste-to-resource management at a neighborhood scale. As such, ReGen Villages is poised to upend traditional methods of real estate development and serve as a catalyst and thought-leader in the future of peri-urban living.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

ReGen Villages has set a standard for the re-imagining the modern ecovillage movement, by creating beautiful design frameworks based on passive home and circular building material typologies. Although architecturally agnostic, ReGen Villages references the best in class prefab volumetric and component housing units, that enable local and regional cultural sensitivities and design thinking to influence the most appropriate aesthetic and quality of of experience for each region and locale. Moreover, ReGen Villages focuses on the balance of new build and retrofit housing density in direct relationship to natural resource flows, providing access and agency to communities to feel safe and secure with these critical life support facilities.

Key objectives for inclusion

ReGen Villages works with local community leaders, indigenous populations, people of diverse backgrounds, and especially for social and affordable communities typically devoid of having their voices heard in the planning and development processes. ReGen Villages considers these local and cultural influences to facilitate the reduction of rhetoric typically found in lengthy and stressful community assessment periods, to foster mutually agreeable terms for accelerating planning and zoning conditions necessary to realize urgent housing shortages for communities in need.

Results in relation to category

ReGen Villages has been an active as part of the EU Smart Rural Villages Commission, as well as engaged as a member of the EU Network for Rural Development, and most recently appointed to the U.N. Climate Secretariat Resilience Lab as one of the top 'Bright Light' initiatives that represent nearly all of the 17 U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. ReGen Villages was recently nominated for  U.N. Global Climate Prize as well. Since 2016, ReGen Villages has reached over 150,000,000 web impressions from global and viral mass media coverage, with tens of thousands of engaged future residents from all over the world through our website and social network activities, creating a palpable wave of demand around the world for a new kind of flourishing life in the peri-urban and rural areas in ReGen Villages self-sustaining communities.

How Citizens benefit

ReGen Villages is at the forefront of generative software design for utilizing machine learning to re-frame traditional master planning and zoning conditions through the lens of rapid design iteration. The development of the VillageOS(tm) software continues to be shaped through our active engagement with citizens, local/regional governments, universities, industry collaborations, family farmers and impact family office and sovereign wealth funds. There is a collective effort in other words that spans diverse groups and previously silo organizations that recognize both the urgency, business opportunity and rich research and learning capacity that these interconnected, 'sentient' villages present. Most importantly, ReGen Villages represents the reduction of burdens on government at all levels, reducing burdens as well on healthcare systems and brokering peaceful, happy and flourishing places.

Innovative character

ReGen Villages is the worlds' first technology enabled, bio-regenerative and resilient neighborhood infrastructure and retrofit platform that uses machine learning to continually improve, optimize and mitigate for dynamically changing environmental, economic and health related times. There is a global demand for EU products and services in this category of 'smart' city components, where ReGen Villages and our VillageOS(tm) software are the first to integrate these systems and services in an innovative approach for turnkey planning, implementation, development and management of these communities. Moreover, ReGen Villages intends to connect these VillageOS enabled neighborhoods and retrofits in such a way as to broaden the scope of learning and optimization across similar climate zones around the world.
