Description of the project
Summary
The origin of Kiubiq boxes was the idea to develop a single box furniture system for indoors and outdoors. It can be used in workshops, for camping and van conversions, modular furniture, tiny houses, playroom, garden & household...
A multifunctional wooden box system that is:
- Modular: All formats can easily be connected with each other. And disconnected.
- Sustainable: 100% FSC certified or recycled wood as raw materials. Long product cycle
- Flexible: wide range of application possibilities
- Natural: made of natural birch wood
- Quality: Simple and solid construction for a long product cycle
Key objectives for sustainability
Reduced design: simple, easy to fix, low energy consumption during production, hardly any waste of the wood panels
Reusable: the boxes can be used for different purposes. Example: After being used as a shelf it can be used as a transport box and later on as a storage system...
Recycling: the production process is designed to use various recycled wood panels as well. If new wood is used it is sourced from FSC-certified sustainable forestry.
Key objectives for aesthetics and quality
The many possible combinations of the furniture system encourage users to try out very different visual and functional possibilities. Both straightforward and "wild" objects can be created. The material appearance and the look of the wooden panels are pleasant to the touch. The scorched cut edges and the openly shown construction details make the production process comprehensible.
Key objectives for inclusion
The box can be compared to a "Lego" brick in its application. They can serve different purposes individually or in combination.
This motivates people to realize their own creations. For example, neighbourhood market stalls can be created from the boxes. Or a group of children combines their boxes to a playhouse or a temporary community centre...
Results in relation to category
With the introduction of multifunctional and durable furniture carcasses it is possible to reduce the throwaway mentality. Whereas a poorly made wobbly chipboard carcass will hardly survive a house move, the high quality boxes can be used again and again.
How Citizens benefit
The design phase was characterised by the exchange with the future users. Already in the early stages, the boxes were tested in everyday life in different ways to incorporate the feedback into the box design. In addition to the classic use in the living area, there was also, for example, a test group that used and tested the boxes in the camping area. Others used the boxes to transform a van into a complete motorhome or used the boxes as planters and bicycle trailers. The experiences gathered here have been incorporated into the final design.
Innovative character
Combining traditional craftsmanship with modern, scalable production technology to meet today's demands for quality and affordable prices with local production.
