Architecture is a tool for democracy. At the Municipal School of Architecture in Borlänge, children and young people learn about both the physical environment and the community building process. The School of Architecture is free and available to anyone who wants to.The goal is not to turn everyone to architects, but to establish the right of every child to freely express her or his views, in all matters affecting her or him, which the built environment do.

Summary

Architecture is a tool for democracy. At the School of Architecture in Borlänge municipality, children and young people learn about both the physical environment and the community building process. The School of Architecture is free and available to everyone. The school explore, and develops sustainable and democratic places with architecture as a method. The goal is not to turn everyone to architects, but to establish the right of every child to freely express her or his views, in all matters affecting her or him, which the built environment do. Our motto is Gropius words: ”Let us create a new guild of craftsmen, without the class distinctions that raise an arrogant barrier between craftsman and artist. Together let us conceive and create the new building of the future.”

The aim is to let the terms of sustainable building grow in early ages. Architecture is our tool. The school explores, and develops sustainable and democratic places with architecture as a method. The point is to reach everyone, regardless of class, at an early age. As a civic right.

The understanding of materials, structure, aesthetics and construction is gained through practical exercises in architecture. With the architecture as a method.

Results in relation to category

After joining the architecture school the children becomes members of an expert group that helps the planners to build the municipality. This is a method to bring in the child perspective in planning, but aloso to establish the right of every child to freely express her or his views, in all matters affecting her or him, which the built environment do.

Architecture is a holistic perspective on buildig a society. It is with the help of architecture that environments are designed so that they become accessible to all. Society's spaces become common through the design of the physical environment, but still through the structure of the democratic planning process. Creating common spaces requires the perspective of everyone be included in the design of our environment. It is a human right to be a part of it and to know how to influence.
