Project Description

The hustle and bustle, along with de-industrialization and de-population, is fading away from us.

Standing on these isolated islands of the Dessau, we find a collection of spaces and structures edited by the processes of war, reconstruction, economic collapse, and urban revitalization. Like memories, various "Fragments" are being left after that process. By scattering kiosks combinations along the Red thread to reorganize these"Fragments" and improve social life for local residents.

Description of the project

Summary

The project site is Dessau. It is also a former East German rust belt town, burdened with ruinous industrial buildings and housing left vacant by a declining population. But Memories and Cultural Familiarity are left and reserved in the Dessau Materiality. The “Steel Skeleton” is invoking Dessau’s history as a major German factory town, and the “Concrete Panel” is incorporating the East German state-socialist past.

This Kiosks Project can be considered as a combination of the particular material properties of fragments and their Spatial Presence.
The“Linear Element”, Black hatched area, is concrete panels from the old Plattenbau Building. It serves as Direction Oriented Pathway.
The“Square Element”, Background Linework, is inherited from the Bauhaus. It offers some basic Kiosk programs(retailing and exhibition)
The“Structure Element”, Steel Skeleton, works as framing to organize different elements.

The Red Thread(Roter Faden)traverses the greenbelt with a 2.5 meter-wide pedestrian and bicycle path that includes interpretive signage about Dessau’s urban heritage. By scattering Kiosks Combinations along the Red Thread landscape - the Project’s primary assignment - we intend to circulate tourism throughout the city, amending the lopsided impact of “the Bilbao Effect,” in which a major cultural institution (like Dessau’s new Bauhaus Museum) pumps the local economy but does little to improve social life for local residents. These Kiosks Combinations are located in different places around Red Thread with variation They keep activating the currently underutilized Red Thread and Breen Belt Area by Introducing people from East Side High-Density Residential Community to this “City Backyard”. Each kiosk work with adjacent landscape not only provide specific programs but also extends pedestrian's Movement and activities with the help of "Linear Elements". Four main kiosks: Kiosk·Leading Through, Kiosk· Breaking Through, Kiosk· Popping out, Kiosk · Rotating.

Key objectives for sustainability

This project intends to circulate tourism throughout the city, amending the lopsided impact of “the Bilbao Effect,” in which a major cultural institution (like Dessau’s new Bauhaus Museum) pumps the local economy but does little to improve social life for local residents. These Kiosks Combinations hold different programs(retailing, exhibition, Performance, Workshop) and are located in different places around Red Thread with variations. Not only can they provide multiple programs but also connect the Red Thread, Green Belt, and Existed Boulevard. They keep activating the currently underutilized Red Thread and Breen Belt Area by Introducing people from East Side High-Density Residential Community to this “City Backyard”.

The kiosk can also be considered as a combination of reused materials-- redefined as desired to incorporate contemporary technology.
The“Linear Element”, is actually concrete panels from the old Plattenbau Building. It serves as Direction Oriented Pathway.
The“Square Element”, Background Linework, is inherited from the Bauhaus. It offers some basic Kiosk programs(retailing and exhibition)
The“Structure Element”, from Existed Steel Skeleton, works as framing to organize different elements.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

Movement&Activities Extension

The kiosk is not an isolated programed structure or architecture with an envelope. It works with the adjacent landscape to extend pedestrians' movements and activities.

Each kiosk work with adjacent landscape not only provide specific programs but also extends pedestrian's Movement and activities with the help of "Linear Elements". Four main kiosks: Kiosk·Leading Through, Kiosk· Breaking Through, Kiosk· Popping out, Kiosk · Rotating

"Kiosk·Leading Through":  It draws people from the main red line to the secondary road of the kiosks Combinations. It also serves as the starting point for this secondary road, opening a series of new behaviors and movements.

"Kiosk· Breaking Through": It guides people to start making different choices and go to different directions and landscapes after a single road and break through the "square element". They can choose to cross the box to a performance space or they can choose to cross the box from the other side to a rest space.

"Kiosk· Popping out": It guides people past a "Square Element" with the program of a souvenir shop to a Pop-out display space at an oblique angle.

"Kiosk · Rotating": Surrounding landscape spaces work with Square Element offers workshop spaces and PIN-UP spaces. People experience them with the motion of pushing the rotatable "Linear Element".

Key objectives for inclusion

Urban Revitalization- Circulate tourism throughout the city

Cultural Identity and Belonging

It is a former East German Rust Belt town, burdened with ruinous industrial buildings and housing left vacant by a declining population. But Memories and Cultural Familiarity are left and reserved in the Dessau Materiality. The “Steel Skeleton” of the kiosk is invoking Dessau’s history as a major German factory town, and the “Concrete Panel” of the kiosk is incorporating the East German state-socialist past.

Sustainability- Fragments Reutilization

The kiosk can also be considered as a combination of reused materials-- redefined as desired to incorporate contemporary technology.
The“Linear Element”, is actually concrete panels from the old Plattenbau Building. It serves as Direction Oriented Pathway.
The“Square Element”, Background Linework, is inherited from the Bauhaus. It offers some basic Kiosk programs(retailing and exhibition)
The“Structure Element”, from Existed Steel Skeleton, works as framing to organize different elements.

Innovative character

We can understand this project in three directions. We can understand this project in three directions, from the most direct Materials to the Kiosk that provides functions and structures, to the Kiosks Combinations(with landscape)-revitalization planning beyond the specific program

Materials: It is a former East German Rust Belt town, burdened with ruinous industrial buildings and housing left vacant by a declining population. But Memories and Cultural Familiarity are left and reserved in the Dessau Materiality. The “Steel Skeleton” of the kiosk is invoking Dessau’s history as a major German factory town, and the “Concrete Panel” of the kiosk is incorporating the East German state-socialist past.

Kiosk: This Kiosk can be considered as a combination of the particular material properties of an object and its Spatial Presence.

KIOSKS COMBINATIONS(with landscape): These Kiosks Combinations hold different programs(retailing, exhibition, Performance, Workshop) and are located in different places around Red Thread with variations. Not only can they provide multiple programs but also connect the Red Thread, Green Belt, and Existed Boulevard. They keep activating the currently underutilized Red Thread and Breen Belt Area by Introducing people from East Side High-Density Residential Community to this “City Backyard”.
