Description of the project
Summary
Ronde de Nuit is a valet that proposes to live the moment of getting dressed as an idividual ritual. This meditative experience links the user, his second skin (clothes) and the quality of the materials, allowing Human to line up with himself.
To resist the uses of life, this valet shows up the balance between tenacity and natural solutions of manufacturing trought the material and the finish. Moreover, the repairability has been driven the project trought a local eco-design approach. All has been driven by a vernacular artisanal knowledge that must be highlighted.
Key objectives for sustainability
Sustainability, local quality material, repairability
Create to resist of the uses of life, this valet studies the tenacity of the materials used and the repairability trought a local eco-design approach. The solid US walnut use for the structure comes from the FSC Vercors forest (France). This wood is protected with a natural Roubo varnish (a reversible varnish with alcohol and organic product), developed by the French Restoration and Research Museum Center (CRRMF). The entire valet can be disassembled and is easy to repair, thanks to the screwed hidden assemblies that supersede the glued and welded ones.
Key objectives for aesthetics and quality
To see otherwise, bring value to daily life, enhance an experience
"A minimal life has always provided a sense of liberation, the possibility to feel the essence of existence rather than being distracted by the trivial." Minimum, John Pawson, 1996
The aerial, sober and vertical aesthetic of the valet emphasizes the user's experience. It improve a classic moment of daily life by creating a meaningfull moment allows Human to line up with himself.
Key objectives for inclusion
Aesthetic throught the ages, adaptability
The apparent simplicity of the materials and decorations with sober and minimalistic shapes asserts the idea of rest and relaxation almost meditative. Fully foldable the valet could be open following the desire of the user, creating his own adaptable environnement.
The valet is compose by a seat, a rack, a pocket emptier and a small wardrobe. All these parts are rotated around the central mast which allows the user to adjust the furniture to his convenience, as well as to fold it completely to limit its size.
Results in relation to category
From the user's point of view the changes are daily. Inserting sensitive objects into everyday life allows man to marvel at the simplicity of his daily life. By lining up with himself, Human can take a step towards others.
From the point of view of the production of the valet it is the entire object life cycle that is questioned. The production of our daily products isn't thought locally, whereas the resources and the artisanal technics are considerable on our European territories. This project is a starting point towards a new way of thinking about daily life and the interactions between materials, craftsmen, techniques and users.
On a larger scale, it is a reconstruction of our creative ecosystem that is at stake. The objective is to refocus all local production knowledge, limiting excessive transportation and highlighting local assets.
How Citizens benefit
In this type of project the most important part is the consideration of the real needs of Human. This project doesn't only answer a functional need, but try to answer a gap which exists between the will of Human to slow down the rhythm of his life and a society which doesn't stop accelerating. The exchanges that I had with ready-to-wear brands, potential users and other craftsmen of the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes led me to such a conclusion.
Physical or other transformations
Innovative character
I am going to focus here on technical manufacturing points of the project.
The solid walnut is well protected with a natural Roubo varnish (a reversible varnish with alcohol and natural product), developed by the French Restoration and Research Museum Center (CRRMF). This kind of varnish replaces the polyurethane varnishes commonly used and very polluting. I have developed a technique that allows me to considerably reduce the time needed to apply this type of finish which normally takes weeks.
Moreover I have developed a decoration based on milk casein and marble waste allowing me to create a mineral effect on the vertical parts.
The material used for the pochet emptyer is a wooden weft, develloped to replace the more common caning that take a long time to do and is less resistent.
The upholstery of the seat is perfectly adjusted that allow the user to change this part very easily if it is damage.
The whole valet can be dismantled in 15 minutes, allowing it to be repaired very easily and the assemblies are screwed, preferable to the gluing ones commonly practiced.
Learning transferred to other parties
This project is only the beginning of a project that I want to realize associating the different vernacular artisanal knowledge and the objects of our daily life. Thus the object is no longer a simple consumable, because full of meaning and transmits its own identity. A localized production on a territory offering a rediscovery of forgotten or often delayed local cultures.
