Project Description

The idea was born from a lack felt within the Art Academies of a place that acts as a catalyst and as an expressive tool. The question "What is our necessity?" has stimulated a reflection on how to make up for this lack, A Priori was our answer.
We want to establish a comparison between the research of the students; to create a cooperation network between distant Academies and cultural spaces; to establish a dialogue on topical issues between emerging artists and curators in these institutions.

Description of the project

Summary

A Priori is a project born thanks to the funds of the Student Council of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome to create a paper and virtual magazine for social, cultural and poetic research and coordination among students of public institutions. The project provides for the issuing of a call closed only to students who have enrolled or recently graduated from the mentioned institutions. A jury composed of experts will select a maximum of 20 artists and 20 curators.

After having viewed the respective portfolios, artists and curators will choose each other, forming a series of groups (nodes) to collaborate for the realization of an artistic project to be included in the A Priori paper.

Then, some public conferences will be organized. Here the winners will be allowed to expose their existential and cultural path to open a debate that can highlight affinities and divergences between the interests of the participants, thus establishing a dialogue open space.

Then, the groups will be allowed to develop a project for the paper mediated by an editorial theme that has the following characteristics: first, a relationship between the actions and desires of individuals to rediscover their aims in their local and global contest. Second, a relationship with contemporary existential problems such as global warming, social fragmentation, decay of energy resources.

Finally, we’ll ask all the winners which cultural centres are of greatest interest in the contemporary world. The magazine will be sent free of charge to these spaces and to all the libraries of the academy institutions. This is to disseminate the magazine to as many people as possible and with the widest territorial range.

In addition to the paper project, a website will be spread to allow the winners to develop their research by increasing the training apparatus of A Priori.

Key objectives for sustainability

The environmental problem is linked to education, dialogue, discussion, sensitivity and empathy. Institutions are called upon to mobilize these aspects of the human relationship. Through the editorial theme, A Priori starts from these assumptions to make concrete and practical a more sustainable relationship with the social and natural environment. It proposes the shared creation of practical and poetic social workshops that can be inserted directly into the problems of everyday reality. In this way, A Priori tries to build and encourage a dialogue between the participants, their poetic intentions and the territorial reality in which they live.

Thanks to the dialogue that is established between the winners of the call, thanks to the conferences and thanks to the group projects, A Priori encourages the creation of relational networks and affinities between groups of individuals who can be born, grow and survive the project and become an active part in the process of ecological and social change necessary for the future of the planet.

The paper material is produced with Favini sponsorship, one of the leading companies worldwide in the creation of innovative graphic specialities based on mainly natural raw materials.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

The aesthetic element of the magazine is the product made from the collaboration of the winning artists with the winning curators. These will publish on paper an artistic and non-documentary project that directly insinuates itself with problems linked to the territory.

There will be constant graphic support from the editorial staff for the feasibility of the proposed projects. Therefore, the final product will be a prestigious magazine, made with recycled materials that manage to combine an innovative aesthetic with social and environmental policy.

The requested projects will develop new collective ways of expression, research and artistic experimentation.

Key objectives for inclusion

A Priori wants to innovate the educational system of art in Italy in four actions: 1) establish a comparison between the artistic paths of students who aren’t favoured by territorial proximity; 2) establish a dialogue between students in the same institution; 3) establish a communication channel between student councils; 4) establish a network of cooperation between the Academies and the cultural centres present both inside and outside their territory.

1) The first aspect is developed thanks to the public digital archive that allows the visualization of the works submitted by the students.

2) The second aspect is developed thanks to meetings with professionals in the sector.

3) The third aspect is developed by involving the student councils in the construction of the project.

4) The fourth aspect is developed thanks to the paper magazine that will be sent to the main cultural centres of the country, creating a bridge with the academic institutions. The former will be able to exhibit themselves in the academies with conferences, while the institutions will organize guided tours within these centres.

Furthermore A Priori:

5) Involves citizens with public conferences organized for winners.

6) Involves citizens with the website by offering various educational stimuli: 6.1) an archive of students' works; 6.2) an archive of interviews with cultural centres; 6.3) an overview of the most interesting cultural centres in Italy.

7) It actively involves citizens in the projects organized by the winners.

The magazine will be sent free of charge to all the libraries of the public art institutions in Italy, as well as to all the cultural centres selected by the winners to allow free use to the widest possible public.

All this will allow the creation of a more industrious community both towards its institutions and towards the professional world, and to circulate innovative ideas among students throughout Italy.

Innovative character

In A Priori the three dimensions are closely linked to each other.

The dimension of sustainability is welcomed under two aspects: 1) thanks to the editorial theme for the art projects developed by the winning. Through this theme, A Priori stimulates the creation of a link between the contents included in the paper and the actions carried out in one's locality; 2) thanks to the conferences and artistic events aimed at raising awareness of both the art public and the broad public mentioned above on the issues.

In both cases, it will create inclusive and aesthetic events: the winning artists will work in groups to produce an art project that involves citizens both internal and external to the world of art.

Therefore the aesthetic dimension is implicit in the involvement of innovative artistic projects.

Finally, A Priori himself is based on the goal of building a more inclusive dynamic, between students, between Academics, between cultural centres and Academies and, finally, between professional artists and students.
