Description of the project

Summary

The initial idea for EDMOS was born within a factory that is specialising in producing luxury leather garments in Umbria region of Italy since the 1980-s. Observing the amount of waste that was regularly left after each season's production, Filippo Fanini, the founder of EDMOS, decided to look for way to collect the leftovers and make use of them. After technological experiments EDMOS skin was born. EDMOS is created by carefully reassembling the leather or textile leftovers into a new material, ready to be used again in the industry.

The entire process is environmentally friendly. EDMOS does not require water, and all the supporting materials used for the creation of the new skin are recycled. The use of the machinery is minimised, which allows to involve human hand within the production process, and create job opportunities.

Currently EDMOS is being used mostly for the fashion accessories and apparel, and we see its great potential for other industries that require textile or leather. EDMOS is very resistant. Moreover, each skin retains the original sensorial properties of the material it derives from: leather, denim and so on.

Our company is focusing on B2B collaborations. EDMOS helps companies to recycle the stock they have accumulated and turn it into new material. Working with the creatives we make sure that EDMOS is inspirational as a material: following a creative input we can apply any treatment like print, embossing or laminate it.

Our ambition is to make EDMOS a worldwide known and used material. Our mission is to help recycle as many leftovers as possible, so that each new product that is being created from EDMOS is a step towards a more circular future. Our vision is to make EDMOS a widely accepted and practiced methodology that can reduce waste, create jobs, and promote conscious lifestyle.

Key objectives for sustainability

Our key objectives are achieving circularity, waste reduction, creating conscious collaborations, and rethinking leather.

The starting point for the entire project is Waste Reduction, which also leads to our other objectives. EDMOS started from the observation that fashion industry is guilty of an enormous amount of waste as a byproduct. Each season of work in a production factory results into tons of leftovers. EDMOS aims to collect the production leftovers, sort them, treat them and assemble them into a new material.

By creating new EDMOS skins we strongly minimise waste of the production process, and allow the companies to use EDMOS for the future product lines. Reusing what was considered waste , each company keeps reducing waste of the production even more. EDMOS creating a new source from waste, which is our second main objective: Circularity.

Our focus is leather and textile. Most of our projects are based around leather, which has recently started risking its reputation, and having powerful competitors. It is impossible to reduce the production of luxury goods from leather without touching the food industry: and this is not our mission. Instead our aim is to maximise the usage of leather per skin, focusing on the part of the original skins that are being thrown away. Like that we allow the companies to fully use the leathers they need for luxury goods production, and help them to not commit to waste.

Another important objective is Creating Conscious Collaborations. EDMOS works with brands as a sourcing company, that helps turning their waste into a conscious material.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

EDMOS aims to be conscious luxury company, therefore we aim each skin to be an inspirational material for creatives, provide sensorial experience, and ensure durability and functionality of a premium material.

Each EDMOS skin is composed with care and attention which ensures a sophisticated appeal. Our methodology is developed to achieve aesthetically versatile results allowing to create various textures going from smooth to rough, control the weight of material going from light and crispy to heavy and sculptural. Moreover, each skin is ready to be manipulated as any other fabric or leather. In accordance to the aesthetic idea EDMOS can be painted, laminated, embossed and modified in many other ways to satisfy creative imagination.

The technology we developed allows to preserve the original qualities of the material EDMOS is sourced from. Like that we have successfully worked with denim and leather, creating the new skins that sustained the feel and texture of both. Working within luxury good industry we understand how plasticity, tactility, visual properties and even smell of the material is a key to its appeal. Uniqueness of EDMOS from other recycled leathers and textiles is that it retains the natural qualities of the material it's upcycled from.

EDMOS is designed to become a material for objects and products of everyday use that include accessories, apparel and even pieces of interior design. We have ran numerous tests to make sure EDMOS is resistant. We guarantee longevity of each skin, which means both the durability of material and ability to retain aesthetic properties. Our aim is to generate material that will improve the quality of the product it is made with, and to ensure that each object created from EDMOS is a timeless piece. We believe in encouraging final customers who will wear EDMOS or integrate it into their interiors into making sustainable and conscious choices.

Key objectives for inclusion

EDMOS project started within a luxury leather goods production factory in the very heart of Italy. From the beginning our company is surrounded with the culture of handcraft and having humanitarian approach within its DNA. For us sustainability means creating job opportunities, ensuring the versatility of the design, and being open for collaborations.

EDMOS is a multifaceted process, that starts from sourcing to designing with it. It is in our biggest interest to make sure that we can involve diverse profiles and parties, creating more job opportunities. From sorting out the leftovers to assembling the new skins and applying the treatments EDMOS is requires multiple operations that we source both internally and externally, giving opportunities for local businesses to be involved in the process.

EDMOS has a very competitive price point. We start each new project with analysing the target price we need to meet to be in line with the original material and with the design. It is a premium material, which stands for quality, functionality and aesthetics. Therefore, all supporting materials used during the EDMOS creation are consciously sourced or recycled. Following this rule we make sure that the price of the final product is absolutely worth it and will be pleasant for the client. Focusing on quality across each step of production we create long-term value for the product that will ensure a more conscious attitude for the final client. EDMOS aims to ensure the longevity of the product which naturally leads to a more sustainable lifestyle.

Results in relation to category

EDMOS has worked on multiple projects, within which our company was recycling the stock of the fashion brands in order to create EDMOS leather or textile to be used for their future collections. For the privacy reasons we can not be writing down the brand's names, however, we can illustrate the approximate results and further demonstrate the images in the attachment.

For our recent small scale luxury collaboration we have received 15 kg of leather leftovers from the brand specialising on footwear. We have created 5 new EDMOS leather skins that the brand is integrating as a material for prototypes of the shoes into their new collection. After that each next 5 skins ordered will recycle another 15 kg of their leftovers, while generating new material for the collection.

For another collaboration we have recycled 50 kg of old and to-be-thrown away denim stock provided by the vintage company. We have turned 50 kg of old jeans into 80 mEDMOS denim skins, which in turn will be used for the design of bags.

Each of our collaborations is based on exchange with the companies that have leftovers they have to get rid of, from which we create new material that further can be used for accessories, apparel, or as an interior design textile.

How Citizens benefit

The culture of handcraft and having humanitarian approach is in EDMOS DNA. We are consciously choosing to work with craftsmen. We believe in creating job opportunities through our initiative. Even if we have developed an option of a fully machine-made process, we prefer to put a human being at a centre of our project.

Aside from creating job opportunities, we know that the luxurious and handcrafted feel that each EDMOS piece has it thanks to the involvement of the human hand and sensibility.

Innovative character

The last decade has finally brought a lot of option within recycling in fashion industry. EDMOS main focus is leather recycling. We are working with other materials too, however we choose leather because it is one of the most resistant and aesthetically versatile material. Moreover, there has been a hot discussion around leather: industry is questioning it being sustainable and ethical material. EDMOS proves that it is.

EDMOS stands alone as a recycled leather material for its sensorial properties. Most of the recycled leather materials and eco-leathers are either made from non-leather materials, or from the mix of pulverised leather and other ingredients: non of them are having the same tactile properties of real leather. Due to our way of reassembling the pieces of leftovers each EDMOS skin has same resistance and same tactile properties as original leather it is derived from.

We preserve the appeal and quality of the original material.

Our production process is waterless.

Learning transferred to other parties

EDMOS is more than a recycled leather skin, but a method of recycling that can be applied to any other textile-like material. Moreover, thanks to the way each skin is being treated, EDMOS is a very versatile material. EDMOS can be made extremely resistant and sculptural, fluid and light, can be used in apparel, accessory, interior design and other industries that require textile-like surfaces as a part of design.

Our vision is to generate EDMOS as a new basic material that can be used for every aspect of our lifestyle.
