Basic information

Project Title

House with positive climate balance

Full project title

Future Living: Modular, wisely reduced, barrier free timber houses with a positive climate balance

Category

Shaping a circular industrial ecosystem and supporting life-cycle thinking

Project Description

#FL2 micro-houses provide a wisely reduced, healthy, barrier free living space designed inspired by Bauhaus. They are built to last generations and following the principle of cradle-to-cradle. Our #FL2 modular micro-houses are built on screw foundations without sealing one centimeter of soil. Their roofs are designed for plants as living space for insects. As the #FL2 micro-houses are made from certified massive wood, one single module stores six tons of CO2. Houses which fit in nature with joy

Description of the project

Summary

Building industries is one of the biggest polluters worldwide. Almost two thirds of european soil are in a bad shape. We are loosing one species after another due to the loss of healthy living spaces. We cannot continue consuming resources the way we did the past decades and the way we are still doing it.

What we are proposing is a concept of Future Living (FL): Our #FL2 modular micro-houses provide a wisely reduced, healthy, barrier free living space designed inspired by Bauhaus.

From the first idea to the completion of the first project, #FL2 micro-houses are built on the base of sustainability, following the principle of cradle-to-cradle and they are built to last generations. They are built on screw foundations without sealing one centimeter of soil. Their roofs are designed for plants as living space for insects. As the #FL2 micro-houses are made from certified massive wood, one single module stores six tons of CO2.

#FL2 micro-houses floor plans are flexible and therefore they provide a barrier free, healthy living space for seniors as well as one for families. Due to their design with large window areas and the use of natural materials, they reconnect their inhabitants with nature - the boundaries between inside and outside merge.

Due to the reduced space - one single module has 33 square meters - we reduce the consumption of resources during the building process as well as maintaining the houses.

Nevertheless, inhabitants do not have the impression they are missing something: Due to their straight design, the high quality of the materials and their processing, living in a #FL2 micro-house is extremely comfortable - this with a good conscience.

Key objectives for sustainability

We want a radical change in building industries, which currently is among the biggest polluters worldwide. Therefore we build our #FL2 micro-houses based on these criteria:

- #FL2 micro-houses can be re-built sorted by materials which can be reused - they follow the principle of cradle-to-cradle.

- Regional production: certified massive wood from Bavaria.

- All the used materials were chosen with the criteria of sustainability and longevity.

- Our micro-houses are extremely energy efficient and even exceed demands of sustainable buildings in german legislation in some points. The average heating requirements per year for a 66 square meters house is 2.475 kw/h.

- Due to the reduced space - one single module has 33 square meters, the model for families has 66 square meters - we reduce the consumption of resources in the building process as well as in maintaining the buildings.

- Our micro-houses are built on screw foundations and do not harm the soil ecosystem.

- Their roofs are made to plant and to create new green spaces

- As they are made from massive wood, they store tons of CO2, combined with the way they are produced, they have a positive climate balance.

- We can count on a fantastic network of local partners which makes it easier for us to react to times of extreme prize inconsistency and interrupted supply chains.

Our micro-houses can be an example for a concept of Future Living due to their consistent sustainability, their energy efficience and their concept of reducing consumption of resources reducing space but without making compromises on design, quality and comfort. They combine everything European Green Deal is about.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

Due to their straight and beautiful design inspired by the Bauhaus school and the high quality of the used materials and their processing, our #FL2 micro-houses provide an extremely comfortable living space for singles and families and

make living in a reduced space suitable and attractive for a huge number of people. Large window areas and the natural materials of the houses reconnect the inhabitants of a #FL2 micro-house with nature. The boundaries between inside and outside merge. Massive wood walls store warmth on cold days and leave the heat out on hot days, they manage humidity and ensure an extremely pleasant indoor climate.

Our #FL2 micro-houses show exemplarily that it is possible to live and build in a stylish and comfortable way without destroying nature, but to fit in with joy.

Key objectives for inclusion

Our project aims to make accessible a healthy, sustainable and beautiful lifestyle close to nature for many people in different phases of life. As the floor plans are flexible, they adapt to elder people or people with handicaps as well as to families with small kids.

In times of exploding material prizes, reduction in space can be a way for families and singles to make their dream of an own home come true - this with a positive effect on nature and climate.

People seeing how comfortable it can be to live on a reduced space in all phases of life, this could trigger a change in our perception of how housing should be.

Results in relation to category

The materials used to build a #FL2 micro-house are recyclable or have already been recycled - for example the window sills made of recycled aluminum. By building the #FL2 micro-house, we have shown that it is possible to build a massive house on screw foundations and that their is no need for the use of concrete and other materials that we know are tomorrow's hazardous waste. We have built a massive house not only focusing on its energy efficiency when it is completed, but we have built it with the will to avoid grey energy and therefore letting it be a really sustainable house. As its concept is modular, it can be produced standard.

How Citizens benefit

The #FL2 micro-house was designed an planned by an interdisciplinary team of people in very different phases of life: designers, carpenters, architects, lawyers, journalists, energy experts, singles, single moms, grandparents, young family fathers. The result is a sustainable and beautiful massive wood house that meets the needs and wishes of all of them.

Physical or other transformations

It refers to a physical transformation of the built environment (hard investment)

Innovative character

In comparison to a huge part of the tiny house movement we are convinced that only reducing space is not a really sustainable solution. In order to be one, one has to choose materials consciously, focus on quality and longevity and build in a massive way focussing on energy efficiency and comfort - as we do. This is why our houses are explicitly massive micro-houses and not tiny houses.

This is also innovative in comparison, because our floor plans deliver the comfort of a conventional house without folding solutions not suitable for everyday use.

Learning transferred to other parties

We want our concept of future living to become attractive for many people, because the way we build and house has a huge impact on climate, biodiversity and ecosystems. Our housing concept does not harm none of them.

The #FL2 micro-houses are modular and can be produced standard. With pleasure we share our learnings made during the four year conceptual phase of the #FL2 micro-house - and with pleasure we build a lot more of them :-)
