Shaping a circular industrial ecosystem and supporting life-cycle thinking

Project Description

Eslora is a project that rethinks the beach bar, providing design and innovation, with the philosophy of maintaining and respecting its natural essence. A flexible system that uses dry-fit modules to be assembled as needed and adapted to any beach of the Catalan and Balearic coast, avoiding negative impact on the environment.
A sustainable space with local and toxic-free materials, which uses plastic waste from the environment to create their own furniture; self-sufficient and energy efficient.

Description of the project

Summary

Nowadays we live in a society with a rhythm of life and a level of consumerism that neither the Mediterranean nor the entire planet will be able to sustain. A society unaware that every minute a huge amount of waste generated by itself reaches the sea. A society that ingests 70,000 microplastic particles per year. A society that has to change. The footprint we are leaving on nature is neither sustainable nor acceptable.

ESLORA was born with the aim of creating spaces to raise awareness, set an example and enjoy good habits, respecting the environment and acting to conserve it.

A project that rethinks the beach bar, providing design and innovation, with the philosophy of maintaining and respecting its natural essence, adding sustainability throughout its life cycle, from the design process to its final disassembly.

It’s a flexible construction that uses a dry fitting system that allows it to be assembled and disassembled according to the needs and that can be implemented in any environment on the Catalan and Balearic Coast without making any negative impact to the planet.

A sustainable space, made with local and toxic-free materials which uses the plastic recollected from the local beaches to create the furniture of the space; self-sufficient because it uses the solar energy and reuse the rainwater; and energy efficient due to the use of low consumption components.

With ESLORA we want to show that we have to act. We must reduce waste and recycle the one that are already generated. A public and accessible space that socializes the necessary philosophy of sustainability. An initiative for society that wants to help to make visible a global problem with local level solutions, with the ambition of generating community and good habits for the common good.

Key objectives for sustainability

ESLORA is a flexible system composed of modules designed with three types of closing system according to the type of space you want to create: opening, semiopening or closed space. The modules are formed by wood pieces with a dry fitting system that allows build and unbuild according to the needs.

The flexibility of the system allows it to be implemented in any environment on the Catalan and Balearic coast, as it is designed with materials and technical characteristics thought for the Mediterranean climate of this area. Depending on the location, the modules will be configured taking into account the dimensions and the use that you want to give it, adapting it to nature and without making any negative impact to the environment.

This project has been designed taking into account all the sustainable criteria throughout the life cycle, from the design process, the furniture, plates and glasses, the cutlery and the biodegradable packaging among other characteristic elements of the space, until its final disassembly.

It’s also a self-sufficient and energy efficient space; using solar energy, reusing the rainwater, cross ventilation, low consumption components, local and toxic-free materials and components.

The furniture is designed reusing the plastic waste found in the sea, a problem that we have in our everyday life, and against which we have to act. Reusing the plastics collected on our coast, they are classified and selected in order to give them a second life with the Precious Plastic machines, a Dutch initiative that uses open source machines to transform recycled plastic into new objects, such as the furniture in our space.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

ESLORA is a space to learn and raise awareness. An initiative for young and motivated people who want a better and greener planet. It’s aim is to be an example and give people new initiatives to take care of ourselves and our environment. How can we introduce little actions in our daily life that step by step are going to generate great changes in the future.

The space is designed using strategies that avoid a visual impact, created with materials, colors and textures that fits well on the environment, without disrupting the landscape.

We want ESLORA to be an open space where people can feel homely. Creating a social community that agrees with the same concerns.

Key objectives for inclusion

ESLORA was born with the aim of creating spaces to raise awareness, set an example and enjoy good habits, respecting the environment and acting to conserve it. Organizing group activities, such as plastic recollection, talks or educational events in terms of sustainability, to bring society closer to the problem and show alternatives and solutions to improve.

People are welcome to suggest activities, new initiatives and everything they consider to contribute and provide something interesting for the community.

A beach bar accessible for everyone who wants to spend a nice time with good views and a nice environment.

Physical or other transformations

It refers to other types of transformations (soft investment)

Innovative character

With ESLORA we wanted to create a project that combines these three dimensions to create a new concept of beach bar that allows it to be an example place designed with values and qualities that should be essential today.
