Project Description
The 7-meter-long wall installation made of 160 divining rods arranged in a long optical waveform is connected to themes of natural movement and organic form. The use of divining rods, typically used for finding underground water sources, can be seen as a metaphor for tapping into the hidden energies and movements that exist in the natural world. ‘Waveform’ hints to the idea of desiring something that is hidden or difficult to find, like water or minerals.

Description of the project
Summary
I have been chosen to take part in the 7th edition of the European Cultural Center’s international art biennial in Venice titled Personal Structures 2024. My project proposal is for the application fees to take part this international exhibition opportunity.
I will show ‘Waveform’ a 7-meter-long wall installation made of 160 dowsing rods. The installation is arranged in a long optical waveshape, exploring themes of natural movement and organic forms. The use of divining rods, typically used for finding underground water sources, can be seen as a metaphor for tapping into the hidden energies and movements that exist in the natural world. ‘Waveform’ hints to the idea of desiring something that is hidden or difficult to find, like water or minerals. This installation was realized for a group show titled Organic Motion in Berlin earlier in the year.
The need for creative connection is greater than ever given the acceleration of our socio-climate. Constant change, consumerism, and the resulting (emotional) chaos of society causes a distance from what really matters. For this project I will exhibit a work that reminds us to reconnect with ourselves, the natural cycles of nature and our immediate surroundings.
The use of ancient tools such as the divining rod can also be a way of harkening back to the past, reminding us of how humanity has connected with and depended on nature. By bringing together art and the natural world, this installation encourages contemplations on how we might become more attuned to natures its rhythms and movements and in turn each other.
Personal Structures 2024 will run 20.04.2024 - 24.10.2024, in parallel with the next 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. All EEC’s exhibitions and events are Non-Profit and free entry for all visitors -this is very important as it aligns with my belief in the democratization of art. Being an international exhibition, I aim to reach all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities.

Key objectives for sustainability
My installation ‘Waveform’ was created out of a material or tool that is now seen as redundant or unpopular. The divining rod is an ancient apparatus used to locate underground movements such as water, oil, and ore. This tool has been made from a variety of materials over the centuries.
For my installation I have recycled 160 metal divining rods. Repurposing this material as the core of my art installation hints to the history of the material i.e., its use and function while also playing with the notion of things that have passed -in the literal sense of such a tool that was popular and now almost is unknown. This tool is a direct way of channeling into the hidden rhythms of nature. The diving rod is a way of slowing down and connecting to things greater than ourselves, this kind of awareness makes us understand the need to protect nature and the environments we inhabit.
‘Waveform’ is designed in accordance with the exhibition space it will inhabit, being a flexible installation that can be made to size. A premade visual map of each divining rod position will be projected onto the wall ensuring a smooth and efficient install.
The installation will be packed in a small easily transportable box as hand luggage on the plane -saving further excessive transport that occurs with art shipment. My aim was to create an installation that can be moved around and installed where needed with minimal effort and travel emissions on the environment. This also adds to the accessibility and inclusive nature of the work – linking directly to the aim of the artwork to connect and realign our society to nature and each other.
Sustainably in relation to ECC: All buildings have no heating or conditioning systems, all catering used for their events are totally plastic-free, they encourage the re-use of set-up waste materials. They cooperate with associations who re-use exhibitions' waste materials to avoid disposal of materials.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality
‘Waveform’ is a large-scale spatial wall installation. As an art piece it plays with sculptural optics, light shadow, and design. Believing that art can unlock a healing energy, I want to facilitate an understanding of the energy that surrounds us in life and how we can better connect to it. This installation ‘Waveform’ invites the audience to take part in a collective pause and embrace a much-needed reconnection.
For the base wall of the installation, I will use a new process that involves extracting the dynamic resonances taken from nature, these are embedded into neutral substances including minerals, I then add them to pigment. The wall of the exhibition will be painted using this substance to heighten the sense of calm. This method was originally inspired by the works of Wilhelm Reich and Rudolph Steiner and the resonances have been shown to have a positive impact on living organisms such as humans, plants, and soil life. During the group show Organic Motion -that ‘Waveform’ was created for- we found the installation bought a sense of calm and clarify to the viewer. This kind of feedback drives me to propel this project further.
This is why the chance to exhibit as part of The European Cultural Center’s international art biennial titled Personal Structures 2024 is such an amazing opportunity. This interdisciplinary exhibition will be presenting the works of 180 artists, galleries, collectives, and Universities. The cultural benefit to participate on a show of this level is incredible. I would be connecting with other creatives on an international level, contributing to sense of awareness through creative language.
As a funding body you would be a part of this journey by contributing to this creative network. Your support would ensure ‘Waveform’ the chance to be viewed outside of Berlin, opening a larger artistic sphere. Facilitating my participation in ECC’s Personal Structures would mean the chance to support art in an accessible and democratised way.

Key objectives for inclusion
Personal Structures 2024 along with all exhibitions and events at the European Cultural Center (ECC) are non-profit and admission is free for all visitors. Each exhibition space is wheelchair accessible, with events organized for people with disabilities for example a guided tour for the deaf. I am dedicated to the accessibility and inclusion of art as a theme in my own practice, so this project is particularly relevant to me.
Each year, the exhibition is widely communicated throughout the city of Venice and on the organization's social media. A catalogue and flyers are printed, containing visual material and descriptions of all the works shown in the exhibition. This material will be accessible throughout both in person and online. As well as interactive online content, and social media channels. Because of its high visibility, the ECC’s exhibition is an amazing opportunity to showcase my work on an international level, resulting in international exchange and discourse, helping to build a global creative network between Berlin as a location and the host (donor) countries.
There will be 180 artists participating in ECC’s Personal Structures 2024 from a wide range of disciplines and with ranging artistic backgrounds -some having artistic training, others self-taught. This kind of creative discourse is needed to help foster a more united perspective on life. It is essential for contemporary art to be accessible and to support a space that is not exclusively for an art-based audience collective consumption. I am so excited by The ECC’s exhibitions as they support this notion.
Through this opportunity as an independent artist I would join a huge project that shares my goals to create and be a part of a wider creative network and outreach. This project will provide a huge amount of exposure and dialogue for future collaborations and creative ideas through visibly and accessibly of the exhibition.

Results in relation to category
‘Waveform’ was created for the group show ‘Organic Motion’ in Berlin at the start of the year. From the end of April to May the installation received hugely positive feedback from audience interaction. We had several very engaging and emotional discussions with the visiting public while viewing ‘Waveform’. Many left written reviews in our exhibition and generally expressed feelings of awareness for the ecosystem and connecting to nature. We also had a spontaneous dance performance that took place in response to the artwork from a dance collective that viewed the installation. This collective feedback gave me drive and ambition to push ‘Waveform’ into new contexts and spaces. I wish to further an environment such the one experience at Organic Motion where discussions, emotions and thoughts are shared in response to artwork.
With your help as a funding body, I would be able to take ‘Waveform’ into to a new exhibition environment at ECC’s Personal structures 2024. I would then reach my goal of expanding the reach and impact of this artwork, helping to spread more creative discussion and awareness around our direct environment and how we connect to it.
‘Waveform’ has already been exhibited on a local scale and has been seen to benefit the local community and art scene. The feedback and foot traffic of over 200 people throughout the duration of the exhibition has shown the impact ‘Waveform’ can have. I am now passionate to take the installation into another creative context that is accessible. The need to spread awareness and connectivity about our direct environments and how we relate and understand it is of key importance.

How Citizens benefit
‘Waveform’ was created for a group show titled ‘Organic Motion’ at the start of the year in Berlin. This exhibition presented a collection of 17 international artists. Through a diverse range of artistic mediums and techniques the exhibition commented on our current cultural climate by exploring the intersection of art and nature.
The constant change and the acceleration of modern life results in a disconnection from ourselves and our direct environments. Organic Motion explored how movement and organic forms are presented within contemporary art, encouraging viewers to reflect on the world and their place within it, prompting important conversations about our relationship with the environment. ‘Waveform’ explores these themes while creating an immersive environment that connects the viewer into a space of reflection and awareness. Each person viewing the installation expressed they experienced a sense of calm and reflection.
‘Waveform’ has already been exhibited on a local scale. This benefited the Berlin community by prompting important questions about consumption and connectivity. The feedback and foot traffic of over 200 people throughout the exhibition showed the impact of the work. I am passionate to take ‘Waveform’ further to another exhibition context. I want to spread the awareness and importance of connectivity amongst each other and our direct environments. In future I would like to create feedback gathering tools for the audience to collect the questions and thoughts while viewing ‘Waveform’.
Having the opportunity to show ‘Waveform’ as part of ECC’s international exhibition is an incredible opportunity to share this project and my concepts around my project. Personal Structures 2024 has thousands of visitors each month and would result in huge interaction with my artwork. And in turn would support the notion of art and culture being accessible to all on a mass scale.

Innovative character
My project is innovative and unique as it is a personal and singular creative development. I have repurposed an historical apparatus into a spatial installation that links to holistic ideologies and in turn comments of our current socio-climate. In parallel to this I have also utilized a new process that involves extracting the dynamic resonances taken from nature and permanently embedding them in neutral substances, including minerals. The wall of the exhibition will be painted using this substance aiming to heighten the sense of calm in the space. I have not heard of an artist using this combination of unique techniques, for this reason ‘Waveform’ has huge potential and reach a huge amount people and to combat a new way of thinking and connectivity around these topics.
As my project is already completed and has had a hugely positive outcome already, I am confident and excited for the chance to be a part of ECC’s Personal Structures 2024. Having the chance to represent Berlin and its creative scene in another country is a huge goal and aspiration of mine. Exhibiting at such a prestigious art exhibition in Venice city would support my personal aim of creating art as an accessible and essential part of day-to-day life on mass scale. All ECC exhibitions and event are entry free, this is a huge draw as -for me, it is essential that art is as accessible as possible in contemporary society.
As a funding body you would be a part of this goal and bigger picture of democratizing art. This art grant in particular suits my project as my own morals and aims of creating a free and accessible art scene are matched by ECC’s events and exhibitions. Your support as a funding body would ensure this creative endeavor the chance to be viewed outside of Berlin, opening a larger artistic sphere and reach. And in turn showcasing Berlins’ creative scene and it's artists as being nurtured and supported.

Disciplines/knowledge reflected
During the creation and implementation of the project ‘Waveform’ I researched into holistic themes and ideologies around the human condition as well as the exploration of historical tools that find energy sources such as water and oil etc. This research led me to the divining rod as a tool and concept to show the ways in which humans throughout history have been constantly seeking further understanding and connection life.
Once I chose the divining rod as my material linking to my concepts, I started to work with the idea of capturing something unseen like a sound wave or emotion -referencing the divining rods history of tapping into the unseen. I decided on the wave motif as a pattern to follow for the shape of the installation. The use of divining rods, typically used for finding underground water sources, can be seen as a metaphor for tapping into the hidden energies and movements that exist in the natural world. ‘Waveform’ hints to the idea of desiring something that is hidden or difficult to find, like water or minerals.
I used organic research along with my own experience and skill base to create this installation. I am eager to share this project as connectivity amongst each other and the awareness of nature and our position on this planet is of utmost importance to discuss. Given the chance to exhibit at this amazing international exhibition Personal Structures 2024 with ECC next year would enable ‘Waveform’ to be accessible on a mass scale, helping to promote the important discussions needed about life collective whole on this planet.

Methodology used
My approach for the implementation and execution of this project has been one of patience, creative flow, and balance. Once the project ‘Waveform’ was completed, the connection and feedback from the local community and wider Berlin was overwhelming. The audience response to ‘Waveform’ was that of a general feeling of calm, introspection, and clarity. This has spurred me to develop the project further, aiming to reach a wider audience. If through my art I can create more connection and creative dialog around important aspects of life -such as the environment and collective connection- I will do everything I can to develop this further. This is what contemporary art should be doing, uniting, and bringing together.
Once exhibiting ‘Waveform’ in Berlin a project manager from ECC got in contact with me and invited me to be a part of Personal Structures 2024, this is the amazing opportunity to take this project overseas. With the aid of this funding body, I would be able to take my project further than I ever could as an independent artist, the visibility and accessibility through ECC’s Personal Structures exhibition something I would never be able to reach without this opportunity.

How stakeholders are engaged
No stakeholders local, regiona or national were engaged in the design or implementation of ‘Waveform’ or the initial exhibition this project was created for: Organic Motion. Both creative endeavors came from me as an individual artist. Organic Motion was hosted in my studio and with my team of in-house technicians. Both creative endeavors where funded through me with no help from grants or external sources.
The project I am now applying for funding to participate -The European Cultural Centre: Personal Structures 2024- is a cultural organization in several locations with hundreds of artists participating. It operates in Italy, The Netherlands, India, Russia, South Africa, USA, Japan, Belgium and it is rapidly growing.
The ECC is a cultural organization with over 70 international organizers and professionals. Everyone involved is devoted to cultural exchange, meetings, exhibitions and creating innovative projects throughout an international creative community. Each year just under two hundred artists participate in the exhibition Personal Structures, resulting in a huge number of sponsors and external funding bodies –just like this one. The list of previous sponsors is extensive, please see attached the supporting documents with stats and overviews of the most recent edition of this exhibition provided by the ECC.
The combination of so many varying stakeholders and funding bodies throughout this project creates a diverse and layered network for growth and cultural exchange.

Global challenges
The participation of ‚Waveform’ in ECC’s exhibition Personal Structures 2024 will invite the audience on mass scale to consider the ways in which we can connect further with the natural world -something that is particularly important in an age where we are increasingly disconnected from nature and ourselves. By bringing together art and the natural world, the installation encourages us to contemplate our relationship with the environment and to consider how we might become more attuned to its rhythms and movements.
The use of divining rods, typically used for finding underground water sources, can be seen as a metaphor for tapping into the hidden energies and movements that exist in the natural world. ‘Waveform’ hints to the idea of desiring something that is hidden or difficult to find, like water or minerals. Like the diving rod’s purpose of unearthing difficult, hidden elements, ‘Waveform’ highlights the difficulty in humanities disconnection from the environment and in turn each other.
‘Waveform’ probes and questions the rhythms of our everyday life. Being constantly stimulated by external source such as technological devices, we rarely take the time to think about nature and how it connects us all. This is a global problem and one that ‘Waveform’ aims to combat and address. The need to connect and converse openly about these topics is evident now more than ever. My participation in ECC’s Personal Structures 2024 will provide an international opportunity to highlight these topics and make the audience on mass reconsider and reconnect.

Learning transferred to other parties
The installation ‘Waveform’ can be made to size and adjusted in accordance with its locational requirements. A premade visual map of where each divining rod is to be positioned is made preinstall. This is then projected onto the wall ensuring a smooth and efficient install that is simple and clear for anyone involved.
All divining rods are packed in a small easily transportable box as luggage. An install kit is already made with a compact projector, wave pattern template, pigment containing resonances, drill, gloves etc.
The installation has already been displayed in Berlin and is now packed and stored ready for the next exhibiting location. As a project ‘Waveform’ is made to be maneuverable, transferable, and adjustable. This is why it is the perfect project for the participation of Personal Structures 2024. A large-scale group exhibition taking place in Italy ‘Waveform’ can be easily transported and set up with minimal stress or cost.
I already have ideas for the expansion of this project by setting up an art exchange with different art spaces and creative communities across the globe. I would offer the space I have here in Berlin to show work and in exchange exhibit ‘Waveform’ in other countries/locations with similar projects. I would record and document visitor experiences and would ask the same from the exchange space. This is a working concept for the transferability of ‘Waveform’.
