Project Description
Conca dell Incoronata used to be the main waterway in Milan. Its sluice solved the problem of large terrain drop during water transportation by raising and lowering the water level. Description of the project
Summary
Conca dell Incoronata used to be the main waterway in Milan. Its sluice solved the problem of large terrain drop during water transportation by raising and lowering the water level. In recent years, with the development of the city and other means of transportation, Conca dell Incoronata has been abandoned. gradually forgotten by people. This design creates a landscape with variable water levels according to the behavior and activities of the surrounding people, reviving people's memory of Conca. At the same time, people can feel the flow of time and history through the change of water and the change of natural environment.
Key objectives for sustainability
This concept achieves cultural sustainability through time-based design strategies and changes in water levels, and plays a role in the continuation of Milan's urban culture.
Key objectives for aesthetics and quality
The main goal of this design concept is to reinterpret the function of the Milan Canal through the transformation of the site through time-based design ideas, thereby reawakening people's memory of the history of the Milan Canal.
In this concept, we use water, plants, light and other elements to form landscape places that change with time. Among them, the water element reinterprets the function of the Milan Canal to solve the height difference in the past through the rise and fall of the water level. At the same time, different spatial forms are formed at different time periods according to people's life routines, so that the site contains different types of behaviors. The plant elements form different seasonal changes against the change of time, and form different color scenes throughout the year. The lighting elements match the changes in the water level to form different brightness effects, which attract people to stop at night.

Key objectives for inclusion
In this concept, we paid great attention to the accessibility of the site. This is a little systematic in the way of dealing with the height difference of the site. By placing ramps instead of stairs, everyone, especially the disabled and elderly groups, can reach or pass through the site, so that they can stop, relax, and move around here.
How Citizens benefit
The continuous rise and fall of the water in this concept fits with the commuting time, meal time and leisure time of office workers, students and other groups, so as to be able to bring some changes and fun to their daily life. At the same time, for the tourist group, the rise and fall of the water informs about the history of the Canal of Milan and considers it an important tourist attraction. All in all, the changing water level in the concept hopes to attract people back to the site. Therefore, when the crowd comes back to the venue, it can activate the venue, thereby rejuvenating the area.

Innovative character
An innovative feature of the concept is the introduction of a "time-based design" strategy. Taking time as the starting point and coordinating different elements, the abandoned spaces in the city can be activated.
Disciplines/knowledge reflected
In the process of designing the concept, we took history, design, art, botany, statistics, hydrology, optics, etc. and combined them into one project. The cross-integration of history, design, and art not only provides a formal language for the concept, but also connects the design concept with the history of the Milan Canal. A fusion of hydrology, statistics, and optics provides the basis for the concept of where the water comes from and how often the water level changes. Botany provides a variety of plant options for this concept, so that a combination of plants with different seasonal changes can be formed. The added value of this process is that the intersecting combination of different disciplines forms a variable space and activates the authentic urban place.
How stakeholders are engaged
Stakeholders at different levels can give financial support to the design and development of the concept, adaption permits, so that it can be developed and the area can be activated, thus providing a model for cities in other European countries or regions.
Global challenges
Through time-based design, this concept activates the abandoned areas in the process of modern urban development, so that the fragmented space in modern cities can be applied, and the history of the city can be continued and developed. At the same time, the sense of urban cultural belonging of Milan is enhanced by introducing water elements.
Learning transferred to other parties
First, the design strategy—time-based design. In other places, elements related to time can also be used as a basis for application and design. For example, in this concept, people's daily life time, store opening hours, and changes in four seasons are regarded as "time-based design" "The basis of the strategy, which guides changes in water levels, changes in lighting, etc.
Second, for the application of plant seasonal changes. In other places, the color changes in different seasons can also be formed through the combination of local plants.
