Description of the project
Summary
The Gurtum Charitable Foundation has completely rebuilt an elementary school in Gostomel. This school suffered 3 direct hits in March 2022. Local children no longer had a place to study. The school is 120 years old, and it was very important to preserve and restore this building, as it is a historical value. However, it is impossible to open a school without a shelter due to the law in Ukraine. That is why our foundation built a separate shelter near the school on the territory of the educational institution.
The implementation of this project allowed 170 local children to start their education in an offline format. Their parents were able to go to work, and the school itself got 10 new jobs after the opening.
In addition, this shelter has become an adornment of the entire region. People from other cities come to see the unique fairy-tale shelter.
The main goal of our activities is to bring Ukrainians back to Ukraine. We want to show them that there is a school where their children can study and a safe shelter on the territory where children will be comfortable and interested in spending time in times of danger. To show that it is possible to live in Ukraine even during a period of military situation and that the regions are being rebuilt. The return of Ukrainians who have temporarily left is very important for Ukraine's economy.

Key objectives for sustainability
Such projects gather many caring people around them and show their unity. It is very important for us to help people in the affected regions to restore their normal lives.
A lot of volunteers, people from different professions from different cities and even countries helped us realize this project.
Ue shows the world that everyone can take a small step and lend a helping hand to those who need it.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality
The goal of our project is to show that shelters that protect people in times of danger can be beautiful and stress-free. This is especially important for children. The shelter was built on the territory of an elementary school. The small children from this region experienced a lot of suffering and stress during the massive shelling in March 2022. It was extremely important to build the most fabulous shelter, so that staying inside was a game and an interesting journey.
During the periods of calm, the shelter is used as an art center for children. Various events and celebrations are held there, as well as workshops and hobby groups.
Very soon we will open a children's movie theater there and create a small zoo nearby.
The whole concept was to create the mood of a fairy tale, respectively, the Lord of the Rings by Tolkien. The team of volunteers of our foundation includes designers and architects who developed the concept, design, and architectural project following the idea.
Currently, all local excursions to the de-occupied territories of Kyiv region include a visit to the Hobbit House shelter. In addition to the destroyed buildings and infrastructure of the surrounding area, people want to see steps towards the restoration of this region. And improvement is very important. After all, this region has never seen such unique buildings.

Key objectives for inclusion
According to the legislation, all shelters are marked on the public map of shelters in Ukraine and are accessible to all people in times of danger.
The design is a structure that is maximally suitable for use by all categories of the population without the need for additional adaptation. Universal design does not exclude the use of
auxiliary devices for specific groups of people with disabilities.
The building complies with all standards of inclusiveness in accordance with the norms in educational institutions.

Results in relation to category
Our project allowed 170 local children to return to offline schooling. Their parents now have the opportunity to return to work. And 10 new job positions have been opened at the school.
In a global sense, our project is an example of beautiful and safe. This building is interesting from a design point of view, both for locals and tourists from other countries, because it has no analogs in Ukraine.

How Citizens benefit
During the construction work, parents and teachers of the school periodically joined our project. These are local residents for whom it was very important to return the possibility of a normal educational process to local children

Innovative character
In Ukraine, shelters are not built in primary schools for the sake of beauty. All the shelters that have been built over the past year are cosmetic repairs in the basements of educational institutions.
With our project, we wanted to show the public and the country's leadership that this type of building can be not only safe but also beautiful.
It is very important for children to be in a beautiful and interesting place in times of danger. We want it to be associated with play, not danger.

Disciplines/knowledge reflected
Our foundation includes designers, architects, builders, and artists. They performed some of the work on the project for free on a charitable basis. For many conscious Ukrainians, professionals in their field, it is very important to be involved in charitable projects.
Methodology used
The main thing for buildings of this type is safety. That's why we used all the heavy-duty materials approved by the standards for shelters.
The building itself is located 1500 mm below ground level. The top is covered with another 1000 mm of ground for better protection.
The shelter is a monolithic structure of 250 mm thick concrete.
To decorate the main entrance, it has an additional brick wall with round doors and windows to reflect the overall design concept.

How stakeholders are engaged
Our project involved many people at different levels. The local authorities did not help with the implementation of the project. They only thanked us for giving local children the opportunity to study.
Individuals and legal entities helped us with donations, construction materials, and gifts for children.
The main support was provided by Ukrainians living in Japan. This is the diaspora of Ukrainians in Japan NGO Krayany.

Global challenges
Shelters of this type can be built throughout Ukraine, wherever they are needed. If a building does not have a basement that can be converted into a shelter, there is no other option than to build a separate shelter.
Our foundation has experience in constructing such buildings and can implement such projects wherever it is needed.

Learning transferred to other parties
Our project was the first of its kind, but not the last. We have already built another shelter for a kindergarten and a school in the village of Ozero, Kyiv region, for 300 students.
The main advantage of our projects is their cost. Since a lot of the work is done by volunteers for free, and we, as a foundation, do not receive any salaries or remuneration from the project, we can offer such projects to be implemented in other places where there is a need at a competitive cost.
The state does not have enough money to cover all the needs for shelters in educational institutions. Therefore, we can apply our experience to help other communities.
